The Wheaton Academy football campaign opened the season with a commanding 42-6 win over the visiting Urbana Tigers. The Warriors jumped out to a 28-0 lead at halftime thanks to a variety of contributors in the first half. The win marks the 6th consecutive season the Warriors have won a game during week 1.
After stalling on their opening drive, The Warriors were able to take their second possession of the game and punch it in on a 4-yard Gus Walakehwon touchdown run.
Jayson Rucker returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown, and moments later
Stephen Garner recovered an Urbana fumble and took it 25 yard for the score.
Stephen Garner scored on a 5 yard touchdown to account for the 28-0 halftime score.
The Wheaton Academy defense was stout all night, forcing multiple fumbles while scoring twice off of scooped fumbles. Safety
Fabian Alvarez scored late in the game on a long fumble recovery touchdown.
On offense, quarterback
Shane Baumgarten completed 7 of 12 passes for 77 yards, he also scored on a 1 yard rushing touchdown. The leading rusher was
Jayson Rucker with 26 yards, but the Warriors spread the ball on offense with 9 different players carrying the ball for a team effort of 108 yards.
On defense
Trevor Donna lead the way with 10 total tackles.
Christian Pares and Josh Friedland each had a sack in the game.
