Final Score:
Wheaton Academy 24
Aurora Christian 3
Summary:
The rivalry game between Wheaton Academy and Aurora Christian didn't fail to disappoint again as both teams traded blows in the first half with Wheaton Academy leading 7-3 going into intermission. After stopping the Eagles on their opening possession, the Warriors marched 55 yards down the field in 7 plays capped off by a 21 yard pass from senior QB
Belay Brummel to senior WR
Breck Peacock to go up 7-0. The Warriors subsequent offensive drives in the first half were hampered by an array of penalties and a pair of turnovers.
While Aurora Christian assembled a few drives themselves, all came up short save for a 24 yard field goal in the second quarter. Wheaton Academy's defense came through again while the offense kicked into gear midway through the third quarter with a flurry of scoring from RB
Gavin Pedone, who notched two rushing TDs, one an explosive 40 yard rush up the middle in the third. Senior kicker
Declan Finnegan would also hit an impressive 45 yard field goal to give the Warriors a two possession lead.
"We expected a battle, and we didn't do ourselves any favors by keeping Aurora in the game with our penalties," commented Warrior head coach
Jim Johanik. "This was a team that gave St. Francis fits in the first half of their game together. They are well-coached and tough. It was a good test for us heading into the playoffs."
The Warriors achieved the most regular season wins (8) in the history of the school, but their celebration will be cut short as they quickly head into one of the toughest 4A brackets in recent history.
Next week's opponent will be determined late Saturday during the IHSA playoff pairings event.
