March 2nd, 2022- Coming off an impressive 16-5 season that culminated with the 4th place finish in the IHSA State Tournament, expectations will be high for the Warrior Lacrosse team in 2022. In a recent poll released by True Lacrosse Illinois, the Warriors came in at #3 in the state. According to Coach Mike Gabel, the Founder and Co-owner of True Lacrosse Illinois, "Wheaton Academy returns the core of their players that led them to the Final Four weekend last year. Leading scorers
Aiden Weisenborn and
Liam White return along with dangerous players at both the attack and midfield. Expect to see A.J. Serna,
Gavin Pedone,
Davis Schneider, and a host of others contribute to the scoring totals. The defense will be anchored by Mikey Edell, and he will be accompanied by Jake Wells and
Jack Brand in slowing opposing offenses. Johnny Carrington returns in the net and will be joined by junior transfer Jaret Jawor. There are also a handful of freshmen that may find a way to contribute to the varsity team. The Warriors are looking to get back to championship weekend and use their experience from last year to challenge the best in the state."
The Warriors may have surprised people last year but that won't be the case this year as they currently have seven of the other nine teams in the Top 10 on their schedule including #1 Loyola Academy and #2 New Trier. The Warriors will also play some of the nations best as they will host Brother Rice (MI), travel to New Jersey to take on Don Bosco Prep, and compete in a three day tournament in Ohio in the Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Association Tournament.
While Loyola Academy and New Trier have combined to win the last 20 IHSA State Championships, the Wheaton Academy Lacrosse program is did not even exist 10 years ago. The Warriors will look to build on last season's success when they open the season Monday March 14th against #8 Glenbard West in an early Top 10 matchup.
Go Warriors!
