Final Score:
Immaculate Conception 42
Wheaton Academy 20
Summary:
Wheaton Academy's unbeaten record and streak of four straight shutouts came to an end against a strong IC Catholic football team, currently ranked #1 in 3A football from multiple sources. The Warriors were challenged early on with the injury of its leading running back and starting safety,
Stephen Fellowes in the first few minutes of the game. ICCP on their second offensive series stretched WA's secondary with quick slant to all-state receiver KJ Parker for the first score of the game. Wheaton would respond with an offensive drive in the second quarter that saw QB
Belay Brummel (23/39 for 303 yards, 2TDs, 2 Int) connect with senior WR
Breck Peacock (10 rec for 120 yards) multiple times. Brummel would later hit seniors
Evan Eckert and
Jalen Whitaker with strikes for scores. Sr.
Declan Finnegan, coming off of a shutout at goalie at a WA soccer match in Clinton, IA earlier in the day would hit two field goals on the night, one from 38 yards and the other from 29.
The combined and balanced play of ICCP's WR KJ Parker and RB Denzell Gibson were too much for the Warriors to contend with, who gave the Warriors fits with their big play production. "It was the four big plays from both these gifted athletes that opened up the game for IC," WA head coach
Jim Johanik said. "I'm grading at the film last night and this morning and I seeing that our guys played well and played tough. There were not glaring breakdowns save for a few plays, and IC is that good of team that they took advantage of them."
"I'm proud of our guys and our growing program. A lesser IC team destroyed us 50-0 on that same field four years ago. I can see this IC team go deep into the playoffs if not win it all at 3A. They deserve the press they are receiving."
The Warriors (5-1) travel to Elgin next Friday to take on St. Edward, game time 7:30pm.
