The Wheaton Academy Warriors moved to 2-0 on the season with a hard-fought 21-7 win over St. Edward. The Warriors had to fight back from an early deficit to secure the win, thanks to solid defense and an opportunistic offense.
Wheaton Academy found itself in a 7-0 hole at the beginning on the second quarter after turning the ball over on the first two offensive possessions. Wheaton Academy converted twice before halftime on long touchdown passes, the first a 50-yard catch off of a tipped pass by
Micah Nickols. The second touchdown came on a 30 yard toss from
Shane Baumgarten to receiver Alex Ventimilla. The Warriors took a 14-7 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the two teams traded turnovers, punts, and solid defensive possessions. Wheaton Academy finally broke through in the fourth quarter with a 4-yard touchdown run by Ventimilla. The Warriors defense held firm and secured the 21-7 win.
On offense,
Shane Baumgarten was the leading rusher and passer, carrying the ball 9 times for 62 yards and completing 8 of 13 passes for 128 yards and 2 touchdowns. Alex Ventimilla accounted for two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving.
On defense, corner Tre Becks lead the effort with 9 total stops. Gus Walakehwon had 7 total stops, 5 tackles for loss.
Jared Samuelson tallied 7 total tackles with 4 tackles for loss and 3 sacks.
Next week Wheaton Academy travels to Elmhurst to play Immaculate Conception. Kickoff is at 7:15 PM.
