The Wheaton Academy football team completed their historic regular season on Friday night with a commanding 33-14 win over the Chargers of Aurora Central Catholic. The win moved the Wheaton Academy record to 6-3 on the year, thus securing a bid in the IHSA State Playoffs for the first time since 2009. The 6-win regular season marks the best record since 1980, and the first time in the modern iteration of the program that the team has had 6 wins in the regualr season. The Warriors will find out who they play next week once the brackets are released on Saturday night.
ACC opened the scoring on the night with a quick-strike touchdown drive after the initial Warrior drive stalled. Wheaton Academy answered quickly on a
Chase Martin 5-yard TD run, and the Warrior defense put a score on the board for a second week in a row thanks to a
Grady Crawford 25-yard interception return for a touchdown. In the second quarter,
David Thrasher connected with
Harrison Taylor on a 32-yard touchdown completion, and the Warriors took a 27-7 lead into halftime after Martin ripped off a 52-yard TD run down the sidelines.
The Warriors capped their scoring for the night with a Thrasher 16-yard TD pass to
Steven Sellers. Sellers made a slick move on the DB and sprinted into the end zone. ACC scored late in the 4th quarter on a long touchdown pass to account for the 33-14 final.
The Warrior offense racked up 467 yards of total offense.
Chase Martin had a huge game, carrying the ball 24 times for 208 yards and 2 TDs. Thrasher completed 12 of 24 passes for 182 yards and 2 TDs. Sellers was the most productive receiver of the night, catching 4 passes for 72 yards and 1 TD.
On defense, aside from 2 big plays, the Warriors held ACC's offense in check.
Nori Kasai has 5 total tackles, and
Grady Crawford chipped in 3 tackles with an interception for a touchdown on a pass that was tipped by
Michael Callentine.
Dimitrie Skakavac also had a solid night with 6 total tackles.
