The Wheaton Academy Warriors defeated Fenton 24-14 on Friday night, securing a 5-win season for the first time since 2010. The win makes the Warriors playoff eligible with one game remaining on the schedule.
The game got off to a rough start for the Warriors. The Bison scored on their first drive to take a 7-0 lead. After a Wheaton Academy fumble, Fenton again scored on a long run to make it 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Wheaton Academy first got on the board in the second quarter on a long touchdown drive capped by a
Camden Meade 1-yard touchdown run. After a
Luis Ramos interception, the Warriors drove the length of the field again, and
Graham Cote converted a 30-yard field goal to make it a 14-10 Fenton lead at halftime.
The Warriors got the ball first in the second half and rode large holes opened by the offensive line all the way down the field.
Camden Meade scored again on a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 17-14. The defense played inspired football all night and kept Fenton off the scoreboard in the second half. Wheaton Academy capped the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 13-yard pass from quarterback
David Thrasher to running back
Chase Martin. The 24-14 lead held for the rest of the game, and Wheaton Academy moved its record to 5-3 on the season.
On offense,
Camden Meade lead all rushers with 130 yards on 25 carries and 2 touchdowns. Thrasher completed 11 of 17 passes for 207 yards and 1 touchdown. The leading receiver was
Marino Costello with 2 catches for 72 yards. Meade also had 4 catches for 61 yards. He accounted for 191 of the Warriors' 351 yards on offense.
On defense,
Chase Martin played a strong game, tallying 10 total tackles.
Luis Ramos played the best game of his season, recording 8 solo tackles with 1 interception, his 6th of the year.
Camden Meade recorded 11 tackles, 1 pass defended, and 1 INT as well.
Next week the Warriors host Aurora Central Catholic in the final game of the regular season. Kickoff is at 7:00 PM.
