Spring Sports Recap (4/11-4/16)

April 18th, 2022-

Girls Soccer: Coming off a tough weekend in the Body Armor Series the girl's soccer team traveled to Rosary on Tuesday for their lone game of the week. Sophomore Grace Platt opened the scoring for the Warriors in the 8th minute when her shot from the right side of the box found its way past the Royals goalkeeper. WA kept the pressure on and just 15 seconds before half time Lilly Lebo knocked home a Jocelyn Royce cross to double the Warrior lead. Halftime didn't cool off the Warriors as Eva De Souza and Sydney Abbott scored within the first 10 minutes of the second half to give the Warriors a 4-0 win. Sara Swoboda picked up the shutout in goal. The win brings the Warrior's record to 5-4-1 and 3-0 in MSC play. The girls return to action Tuesday 4/19 when they host St Edward.

Baseball: WA baseball opened conference play on Monday with a tough back-to-back against Riverside Brookfield. Monday's game, at Wheaton Academy, saw the boys face potential MLB draft pick, Owen Murphy, on the mound. Struggling to keep up with Murphy's impressive stuff the Warriors fell by a score of 15-2 on Monday. They traveled to RB on Tuesday but left with a similar result as they fell 12-2. Thursday the Warriors lost to Marian Central Catholic Thursday by a score of 15-11. Will Clegg was 3-4 at the plate with 2 RBI's. JT Manusos went three shutout innings on the mound and recorded 2 hits at the plate. Saturday the Warriors traveled to Lombard to take on Montini. On the mound, Will Lechner went 4 innings striking out 7 and allowing 0 earned runs. Will Osterholm went 3 innings allowing 1 earned run and struck out 3. At the plate, Niko Zepeda went 3-4 with a double, 1 run, and 1 RBI. Three Warrior hitters, Will Clegg, Alex Bagley, and JT Manusos hit home runs as the boys won 10-4. The boy's record now sits at 5-9-2.

Boys Tennis: In what was scheduled to be match one of three of the week the boys took on Waubonsie Valley. The boys battled hard but fell by a score of 5-0 on the day. Despite the tough go on Monday the boys got a chance Tuesday to bounce back as they opened conference play against Aurora Central Catholic. Jeffery Kang and Jeremy Master dominated the two singles matches both winning in straight sets while doubles partners Patrick Morris/Sam Dykema and Will Sias and Eddie Dykema also picked up wins. The Warriors would win the day 4-1 and bring their record to 2-2. Thursday's scheduled match against Nazareth Academy was canceled due to high winds. They return to action next Wednesday 4/20 at Bartlett.

Lacrosse: The boy's lacrosse team put their undefeated record on the line Monday night in another pre-season top-10 matchup when they hosted Huntley. The boys jumped on Huntley (3-3) early and often and won by a score of 18-6. Noah Miller led the team with 6 goals and 2 assists on the evening. Liam White added 4 goals and an assist himself. The win brings the Warrior's record to 6-0 on the season. The boys were back at it Wednesday when they hosted the Porters from Lockport. It was a new opponent but the same result as the Warriors put a beat down on the visitors winning by a score of 16-0. Freshman Zeke Merchant led the team with 4 goals and 1 assist while Jake Wells led the team with 6 groundballs. The Warriors are now 7-0 and will travel to Warren on Tuesday 4/19 next time out.

Softball: With weather forcing several cancellations the WA softball team took to the field for just the second time on Thursday when they hosted Timothy Christian. The girls fell in a big hole early as they went down 12-2 after the top of the third. The Warriors would answer in the bottom half of the inning plating 11 runs to take a 13-12 lead. Unfortunately for WA, the offense dried up as the Warriors would score just once more. The Trojan offense did not dry up as they responded with a 9-run third fourth inning followed by a 5-run fifth as TC would take the win 26-14. The loss drops the girls to 0-2. They return to action next Thursday when they travel to Timothy Christian.

Boys Volleyball: The boys opened the week on Monday when they hosted Marmion. After dropping the first set (20-25) the boys bounced back to win the last two sets (25-13) and (25-15) to get their third win of the season. Their final match of the week brought a more difficult challenge as they traveled to St Francis to take on one of the state's best teams. The boys battled hard but dropped both sets (12-25) and (16-25). The loss drops the boy's record to 3-1. They return to action Tuesday 4/19 when they host Timothy Christian.

Track & Field: On Thursday the boys competed at the 8-team Naperville North Gus Scott Invitational.  The boys were competing against all 3A schools of 2000+ students and Benet and finished in 7th place out of the 8 teams.  The goal of the meet was for the boys to mix it up and be pulled along with excellent competition.  Times were not the best because of how bad the wind was.  Individual highlights included:

  • Sophomore Canyon Roberts ran 110m hurdles in 17.09 seconds and 300m hurdles in 44.33 seconds – both personal bests and moving him into the top 10 in the sectional rankings.

  • Junior Jalen Whitaker cut off a full second in the final leg of the 4x100 and just missed out on catching the next team by .04 seconds

  • Freshman Emery Eckert ran the 100m dash in 12.31 seconds, the fastest freshman in his race

  • Senior Silas Schroeder and Junior Josh Strzalka set an all-time personal best of 2:12.72 and 2:13.30 respectively in the 800m run

  • Junior Peyton Hecht and Senior Jake Figurski both set personal bests in the discus throw

The next meet is a conference competition against St. Francis on Tuesday afternoon
