Hupke Advances to Frosh/Soph Wrestling State Finals

March 7, 2022- After the IHSA state wrestling tournament, The Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association puts on the Freshmen and Sophomore State Series. This tournament is for any freshmen or sophomore wrestler, in classification, who did not qualify for the state tournament. All wrestlers, from all three classifications, wrestle together in hopes of winning the title of Freshmen Sophomore State Champion.

Wheaton Academy's 120 pound wrestler Will Hupke, lost in the blood rounds at sectionals to the number two ranked kid in state, meaning he was one match away from being a state qualifier. That meant he was eligible to wrestling in the Freshmen Sophomore State Series. Two weekends ago, our own Will won his regional tournament at Oswego East. He defeated Angelos from Downers Grove North by fall in 2:37, Grisham from Oswego East by a score of 17-0, Sternstein from Naperville North by fall in 2:01, and then in finals, he defeated Rodriguez from Lyons Township by fall in 2:51. That regional championship qualified him for sectionals.

Then this past weekend as sectionals, Will defeated Chidley from Neuqua Valley by fall in 2:02, then Massaro from West Aurora by fall in 4:05, and then in finals he wrestled Sternstein from Naperville North again and won by a score of 6-2 to earn a sectional championship and qualify him for state.

The state tournament will be held next weekend on the 12th and 13th in Springfield, IL at the Bank of Springfield Center. Follow Will on TrackWrestling here at this link and go to the 120 pound weight class.
