Girls Basketball:
1/31 @ Aurora Central Catholic: The girl's basketball team closed out the month of January with a game against Aurora Central Catholic Monday night. The game, originally scheduled for early January, was rescheduled for the end of the month when Winterim left WA without a number of players. Aurora Central Catholic was awarded a top-three seed in the 2A Johnsburg Sectional after posting a 14-12 record entering Monday's matchup. A slow start and early high press from ACC doomed the Warriors as they fell behind by 10 points at halftime. After the half, the Chargers packed it in and made it tough for the Warriors to break them down. The girls would fall by a score of 53-36. The girl's record falls to 11-9 and 5-3 in the conference.
2/1 @ Ridgewood: WA girls basketball looked to bounce back from a tough loss the night before when they traveled down to Norridge to take on Ridgewood. A low-scoring, tightly contested first half saw Ridgewood take a 14-12 lead at the break. After only scoring 12 total first-half points the girls exploded offensively in the second half, scoring nearly 12 points in each of the last two quarters. The strong second half fueled WA to a big 36-31 conference victory. The Warrior's strong defensive play was the difference as they forced 29 Ridgewood turnovers and scored 14 points off those turnovers. Emma Tate led the Warriors with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. The win brings the girl's record to 12-9 on the season and 6-3 in conference play.
2/3 vs Elmwood Park: Coming off a big bounce-back conference win on Tuesday at Ridgewood, WA girls basketball looked to build on that win when they hosted Elmwood Park on Thursday evening. A closely contested first quarter saw WA jump out to a 9-7 lead. From that point on the Warriors put the clamps on the Tigers defensively. Over the last 3 quarters of the game, WA would hold Elmwood to just 8 points total, including just two each in both the second and third quarter respectively. The girls would force 29 Elmwood Park turnovers and score 12 points off those turnovers. Behind solid offense and great defense, the girls would run away to a 31-15 conference win. Jill Paulson led the Warriors with 11 points while Abby Schroeder scored 7 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The win brings the girl's record to 13-9 and 7-3 in the conference. The girls enter the final week of the regular season where they will host St. Edward on Monday (2/7), and Ridgewood Wednesday (2/9) for Senior Night.
Boys Basketball:
2/1 @ Chicago Christian: The Wheaton Academy boys basketball team took to the road for the 5th straight game on Sunday when they traveled to Chicago Christian Tuesday night. A back and forth first quarter saw WA take a four-point lead after one frame. The second quarter saw an offensive explosion that would put the Knights in a hole they wouldn't be able to dig out of. In the second quarter of play, the Warriors would outscore the Knights by 16 as they would take a 35-15 lead. Chicago Christian was able to keep the last two quarters closer but couldn't close the gap as WA would run away to a 63-40 victory. Sam Anderson would lead the way with 16 points, including four three-pointers. The boys improved their record to 12-10 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
2/4 vs Aurora Christian: The boy's basketball team returned home following a long road trip for a Friday night tilt with conference foe Aurora Christian. Aurora Christian, 14-8, entered the game riding a four-game losing streak while WA looked to build on a Tuesday night win over Chicago Christian. In a high-scoring, back-and-forth first quarter, WA took an early 18-14 first quarter lead. The Warriors kept their foot on the gas the rest of the game and didn't look back leading to a big 64-50 win. They did it while shooting an impressive 74% from the field on 2-point shots. The hot shooting Warriors had four players in double figures, led by
Adam Baarman (13 points), while Josh Oswald,
Cole Andrews, and
Wade Davis all with 11 points respectively. The win brings the Warriors record to 13-10 and 4-4 in conference play. The boys will hit the road again next week with the first of three straight away from home Tuesday night (2/8) at Riverside Brookfield.
