Winter Sports Recap (2/14-2/19)

February 21, 2022-

Boys Basketball:

2/14 vs Peotone: In a rescheduled game from mid-January WA boys basketball hosted Peotone on Monday night. Monday's game began the final week of the regular season for the Warriors, who also took time pregame to honor the program's eight seniors. A tightly contested first quarter saw WA hold just a two-point advantage after one. The Warriors hit their stride over the next two quarters as they out-scored the Blue Devils 32-15, including holding them to just 4 points in the third quarter. Behind the strong second half, and 45% 3-point field goal shooting, the Warriors ran away to 60-37 victory. Three senior Warriors were in double figures on the evening as Cole Andrews had 13 points, Sam Anderson 11, and Josh Oswald with 10. The win brings the Warriors back above .500 with a 14-13 record.

2/15 vs St. Francis: Looking to build on their Senior Night win just 24 hours prior the WA basketball team welcomed crosstown rival St Francis (22-8) to the Warrior Dome Tuesday night. In front of a packed crowd, the Warriors kept Monday night's momentum going, jumping out to a 13 point halftime lead. The pesky Spartans wouldn't go away and slowly chipped away throughout the third quarter. Entering the fourth quarter with an eight-point lead, the Warriors went cold from the field. The Spartans ratcheted up the defense, keeping the Warrior sharpshooters at bay, and held them to just two fourth-quarter points. A missed Spartan free throw with 5 seconds left gave the Warriors the ball, down two, with three seconds left. Unfortunately, the Warriors weren't able to get a shot off and fell 47-45. The loss drops the Warriors to 14-14 and 4-8 in MSC play.

2/19 Regional Quarterfinal vs Aurora Central Catholic: Eyeing a bounce back performance from a tough regular season-ending loss to rival St. Francis on Tuesday night the Warriors opened post-season play in the IHSA Regional Quarterfinal. The 6th seeded Warriors welcomed the 11th seeded Chargers of Aurora Central Catholic (5-23) to the Warrior Dome on Saturday night. In their previous matchup on December 14th, the Warriors easily handled the Chargers 68-23. Through the first quarter, it looked like the second matchup between these two teams was on its way to being a similar result with the Warriors jumping out to a 17-5 first-quarter lead. Over the next three-quarters, the play was back-and-forth with the Warriors only out-scoring the Chargers by one. The first quarter lead held up though, as WA would win and advance by a score of 61-48. Three Warriors were in double figures led by Josh Oswald with 14 points and Sam Anderson and Wade Davis with 13 each. With the win, the Warriors advance to Wednesday's (2/23) Regional Semi-Final where they will take on host Aurora Christian. The Warriors split their two meetings with the Eagles this season.
