Boys Basketball:
1/24 @ Rolling Meadows: WA Basketball took to the road for the third straight time when they traveled to Rolling Meadows for a Monday night matchup. Rolling Meadows came into Monday's game currently ranked 10th in the state, according to MaxPrep's, with a 17-2 record, and boasting one of the top recruits in the country. Unfortunately for the Warriors, a slow start put them in a hole they couldn't quite dig out of. WA was only able to muster 14 first-half points as they entered the half down 36-14. WA was able to win the second half but ultimately fell 67-49. Cole Andrews was the lone Warrior in double figures with 10 points. The loss drops the Warriors 11-9.
1/28 @ Timothy Christian: WA boys basketball traveled to Elmhurst on Friday to take on MSC rival Timothy Christian in front of a packed homecoming crowd. A strong first quarter saw WA jump out to an early 14-8 lead. Timothy would slowly chip away throughout the second quarter leaving the game all square, 26-26 at halftime. The game remained close for much of the quarter before a late Trojan push saw them take and extend their lead to 44-39 entering the final frame. Down the stretch, the Warriors struggled to stop Furman recruit Ben Vanderwal who scored 21 of his 30 points in the second half as he helped lead the Trojans to a 59-50 victory. The loss was the third straight for the Warriors and drops their record to 11-10. They return to action Tuesday, February 1st when they take on Chicago Christian. The boys defeated Chicago Christian 52-39 inside the Warrior Dome back on December 17th.
Girls Basketball:
1/25 @ Chicago Christian: The Warriors traveled to Palos Heights to take on Chicago Christian Tuesday night in what would be their 6th straight road game. After the first quarter of play WA held a narrow two-point lead. Chicago Christian would dominate the second quarter and take a 10 point lead into the half. The Warriors would slowly chip away in the second half, winning both the 3rd and 4th quarters. Down by one with 18 seconds left and the ball, WA got several shots off to try and win but couldn't get any to fall as Chicago Christian would hang on to win 48-47. The Warriors got big days from Jill Paulson (10 points), Emma Tate (17 points), and Abby Schroeder (14 points, 14 rebounds). Those three combined for 41 of the teams 47 points. The loss drops the Warriors to 10-8.
1/27 vs Bishop McNamara: For the first time in six games the girls basketball team returned home to Warrior Dome. On Thursday night they took on Bishop McNamara in an MSC conference battle. Just as the national anthem was about to be played, some burnt popcorn set off the fire alarms in the building, forcing everyone to temporarily leave the building, causing a 25-minute delay. No doubt the delay caused a slow start for both teams as the score was just 5-5 after the first quarter of play. In the second quarter the Warriors hit their stride, out-scoring the Irish by 10, opening up a 19-9 halftime lead. The last two quarters were evenly played as WA held on to win by a final score of 34-21. The Warriors played stellar defense all night forcing 21 turnovers and holding Bishop Mac to just 16% shooting from the field. Olivia Rinde led the way for the Warriors with 14 points. The win brings the Warriors to 11-8 on the season and 5-3 in conference play. They return to action Monday night, January 31st when they travel to Aurora Central Catholic.
Wrestling:
1/29 vs West Chicago/St.Laurence: WA wrestling made the short trip over to West Chicago High School where they would compete in a Triangle match with West Chicago and St. Laurence. Against St. Laurence, the Warriors got pins from Will Hupke,
Peter Johanik, and
George Truitt, as well as a win from
Hunter Kazmierczak. Unfortunately, these strong performances weren't enough as St. Laurence would hang on to win 39-27. Against West Chicago, the Warriors got pins from Hunter Kamierczak and
Peter Johanik along with wins from
Jeremy Johanik and Will Hupke. With the Warriors missing some players in key weight classes West Chicago won five matches via forfeit. The Warriors would fall 57-19 on the day. This match concluded the regular season for the Warriors who finished with a record of 12-7 in head-to-head matchups. The boys will travel to Sandwich High School on Saturday, February 5th for the IHSA Regional Championship.
