Girls Basketball:
11/22 vs West Chicago: The girls basketball team took to the road for the first time on Monday when they traveled to cross town rival West Chicago. The defense was the story as WA held the Wildcats to just 22 total points for the game on 22% shooting while forcing 13 turnovers. Junior Emma Tate led the way for the Warriors with 15 points while Oliva Rinde chipped in 9 of her own. Abby Schroeder had a strong defensive effort as she tallied 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 steals. The win pushes the Warriors to 4-0 on the young season. They return to action when open conference play Thursday (12/2) against Timothy Christian.
Wrestling:
11/23 @ Genoa Kingston Quad: The Wheaton Academy wrestling team opened the 2021-22 season by traveling to Genoa Kingston for a quad meet where they took on Genoa Kingston, Du-Pec, and Polo High Schools. Overall it was a successful day for the Warriors that saw them win all three matches. Against Du-Pec the Warriors got pins from the Kazmierczak brothers, Tag and Hunter, Will Anliker, and Will Hupke on the way to a 60-12 win. In match two, WA got pins from Peter Johanik and Caden Smith which helped them to a 51-15 win over Genoa Kingston. In the final match against Polo High School 8 different Warriors recorded pins leading to a 53-24 victory. The Warriors open the season 3-0. They return home on Wednesday (12/1) for a home triangle against Lisle and Walther Lutheran at 5:30pm.
Boys Basketball:
11/22 vs FW Parker: The Wheaton Academy Boys Basketball team opened their annual Thanksgiving tournament against FW Parker on Monday night.The boys got off to a good start jumping out to a 5 point lead at the end of the first quarter. FW Parker hung around for the first half as WA took an 8 point lead into the break. It was the third quarter where the Warriors finally broke through as they outscored the Colonels 27-9 to open up a 27 point lead entering the 4th. The boys would hold on for a 78-59 win. Senior Cole Andrews led the way with 16 points on 6/12 shooting including 4/5 shooting from three. Other Warriors in double digits included Noah Richcreek with 11 and Josh Oswald with 10. The boys take on Metea Valley Wednesday Night in game two of pool play.
11/24 vs Metea Valley: The Boys Basketball team continued play in their Thanksgiving Tournament Wednesday when they hosted Metea Valley High School in game two. WA came out of the gates hot as they jumped out to a 16-8 first quarter lead. They wouldn't let up as they dropped 26 points in the second quarter to take a 42-24 lead into the break. With a strong defensive second half the boys notched their second win of the season by a final score of 60-46. Junior Noah Richcreek led WA with 17 points on a perfect 5/5 shooting that included 4/4 from three. Senior Cole Andrews also posted double figures chipping in 13 points of his own.
11/26 vs Bartlett: Game three of the Thanksgiving Tournament pitted two undefeated teams against each other with a berth to the championship game on the line when WA met Bartlett on Friday. Unfortunately for the Warriors, a slow start put them in a hole that they couldn't dig out of. After the first quarter Bartlett led by a score of 17-5 and didn't look back. The Warriors played them even for much of the rest of the game but the slow start doomed them. Senior Cole Andrews was one of the lone bright spots of the night as he dropped 25 points including 6 three pointers. Senior Sam Anderson also chipped in 13 points of his own. Bartlett would end up winning by a score of 75-59 and advance to the tournament championship. For the Warriors it was their first loss of the year and dropped their record to 2-1. They will play for 3rd place on Saturday.
11/27 vs St. Francis: In the final game of the Thanksgiving tournament we saw two conference rivals battling it out for 3rd place as Wheaton Academy took on MSC rival St. Francis. After quarter one it was a close game with St. Francis holding a 10-9 lead. They would open up a 9 point halftime advantage and never relinquish the lead as they held on for a 60-50 win. Cole Andrews was the only Warrior in double figures with 11 points. WA will take on St. Francis twice more this season (1/21 at SFHS and 2/15 at WA). The Warriors fall to 2-2. They will return to action Saturday 12/4 when they host Timothy Christian at 6pm.
Congratulations to the Freshman Boys Basketball team who finished the tournament as champions with a 4-0 record that included a 56-24 win over St. Francis in the championship game!
