At the beginning of the game it looked as if Wheaton Academy was in for another low scoring first half. With
2:40 left in the first quarter, the Warriors had only scored 5 points and were down 12, 5-17, to the athletic ICCP Knights. However, a flurry of shots and hustle plays including a 3-pointer from
Bryce Sandberg and drives to the basket by
Christian Smith closed the gap to end the first quarter 17-19. The energy continued to build through the second quarter, hustling after loose balls and strong post play and rebounding by Jake Lindstedt,
Evan Williams, and
Tommy Blum. The half came to a close with the Warriors leading the Knights, 36-32. The second half started and it was clear the Warriors would not be denied.
Christian Smith exploded with 10 points in the quarter helping Wheaton increase their lead 51-38 to close out the third quarter. Smith's offensive onslaught continued through the fourth quarter as the Warriors beat the Knights 70-56.
Christian Smith led all scorers with a season high 29 points. R.W. Reinow had his best game of the season scoring 10 points as he filled in for the injured
Anthony Polinski.
Bryce Sandberg was connsistent as always putting in his 10 points for the night.
Earlier in the night, the sophomore squad started out strong against the ICCP sophomore team, leading at half 23-20. However, they struggled to score in the second half and had difficulty on defense fighting through screens and picking up the open man. They would lose a close one to the Knights with a final score of 39-46.
Sam Scharnowski had another strong performance leading the Warriors with 13 points and several blocks while Jayston Williams added 10 points of his own. The freshman Warriors also had a tough fight and could not finish off the Knights, finally losing 29-37. Overall, the Warriors battled hard and should feel good about the effort and energy they put forward in tonight's contests.
