West Chicago, IL-- The Wheaton Academy Warriors returned to their home court Friday night after a long Christmas and Winterim break to face the Eagles of Aurora Christian in a Suburban Christian conference matchup. The Warriors came out firing from behind the arc, connecting on five made three-pointers--a pair from
Josh Ruggles and
Bryce Sandberg, and another from big man
Gordon Behr. Wheaton Academy led 23-12 after the first quarter.Â
The Warrior's offensive surge subsided in the second quarter, staying even with Aurora Christian with both teams scoring 13 points, giving WA a 10-point lead at the half. WA shot the ball considerably well in the first half, going 7/14 (50%) from three-point range and 48% overall from the field.
Wheaton Academy's post presence came alive in the third quarter, with
Evan Williams (9 points, 2 rebounds) going to work inside, while
Gordon Behr and
Bennett Fuzak battled under the rim for a combined 7 points. The Warriors had a 55-36, 19 point advantage going into the final eight minutes of play.Â
The Eagles were unable to catch Wheaton Academy in the final quarter, again being outscored 21-18 to close the game with a final score of 76-54.Â
Gordon Behr led all scores with 17 points on the night, going 7/13 from the field (54%) and grabbing 8 rebounds.
Josh Ruggles again was consistent behind the arc, going 4-for-5 from three point land, totaling 16 points.
Evan Williams contributed a season-high 9 points.Â
Friday night's victory improves the team's overall record to 11-7. The team will turn around to face the top team in the conference tomorrow night when they travel to face Marmion Academy in Aurora. Game time is 6:00 pm.
