Ruggles dives for loose ball

Wheaton Academy topples St. Francis

The Warriors defeated crosstown rival Saint Francis 63-54 in front of a frenzied crowd in the Warrior Dome on Wednesday night. The Spartans came out to a hot start as Senior Jason Pisarski hit a quick three to start the game. St. Francis held the lead for a very short time, as the Warriors quickly made their early run and never looked back. Senior guard Gabe Partain said,

"I was looking to feed Gordon in the post all night, because he had a nice size advantage."

The Warriors stuck to this game plan and took advantage of his size. Gordon also did a great job of kicking out to shooters on the wing, specifically Josh Ruggles who hit three 3-pointers on the night.

Wheaton Academy held the lead for the majority of the night, and held off small runs by the Spartans. The team had a very balanced offensive attack led by Gordon Behr's 18 points and double digits for Collin Roy (15) and Josh Ruggles (11). Senior Brandon Ruggles led the charge on the boards with a game high 18 rebounds as the Warriors owned the glass and out rebounded the Spartans 36-28.

The win puts the Warriors at 19-6 on the year and 9-1 in conference. The boys will return to action in their first round regional game on Tuesday, February 26th at Illinois Math and Science Academy at 6:00 pm against the winner of the Aurora Central Catholic verses Marmion Academy game on Monday night.
