The varsity boys basketball team returned to the Warrior Dome Tuesday night to play a disciplined and physical Downers Grove North team in the 8:00 slot in the second day of the WA Thanksgiving Invitational.Â
The Warriors got off to a particularly slow start defensively in the first quarter, but offensively connected on two 3's and a pair of field goals to lead 10-9. Wheaton Academy continued to shoot from behind the arc in the second quarter, going 4-for-13 (31%) for the half, neglecting shots in the paint with the exception of a solid contribution from
Jacob Lindstedt off the bench who grabbed a pair of rebounds and scored 6 points in the second quarter alone. Ray Greco kept Downers Grove North afloat with a 3-pointer and a field goal on his way to his team-high 10 points on the night. WA led by 5 points, 24-19 at the half.Â
The Warriors caught fire in the third quarter, knocking down three 3-pointers courtesy of
Josh Ruggles, Will Burdett, and
Bennett Fuzak, while
Gordon Behr and
Grant Copple muscled their way into the paint to contribute.
Chris Johnson's tenacious defensive effort set the tone for the Warriors to eventually rally around to close out the contest with a 45-37 win.Â
Wheaton Academy shot 39% (17/43) from the field  for the night compared to Downers Grove North's 51% (14/27), and was 4-of-9 from the free throw line (44%), while DGN got to the free throw line only six times, converting on four of those attempts (66%).Â
Senior
Gordon Behr and junior
Josh Ruggles led in scoring for the Warriors with 9 points each.Â
Tuesday night's win is the Warriors' second win in as many days and moves the team's record to 2-0. The team will not play tomorrow or Thursday (Thanksgiving Day), then will return to action on Friday night against Streamwood High School at 8:00 PM.Â
