Aurora, IL—It wasn't pretty, but the Warriors persevered through an uncharacteristically physical game Saturday night at Aurora Central Catholic to earn a 66-51 win over the Chargers. Wheaton Academy did an adequate job of picking apart ACC's zone in the first half, by playing through the middle and finding an open
Gordon Behr to make plays and distribute the ball. WA had repeated open offensive looks and outscored ACC 13-7 in the first quarter, including a thunderous dunk by
Jake Cousins off a lob pass from
Collin Roy with 30 seconds to go in the opening period to silence the routy ACC fan section. In the second, the Warriors' offensive patience waned and allowed the Chargers to make a run, outscoring WA 18-15 and cutting the lead to just three points, 28-25 at the half.
Wheaton Academy played a solid third quarter with few exceptions, outscoring ACC 15-9 and entering the final quarter up 9. Senior point guard
Collin Roy took over and led the Warriors in the fourth quarter. With the game hovering around an 8-10 point lead for WA, Roy proceeded to hit back-to-back-to-back three pointers in three possessions to push the lead to 52-39 and set the pace for the remaining minutes. Characteristic of the Warriors' success this year, they got to the free throw line, making 18 of 22 attempts on the night.
Collin Roy was 10-for-14 from the free throw line himself and totaled a game-high 19 points on the night.
Gordon Behr, who sat portions of the game due to foul trouble, netted 15 points, and
Brandon Ruggles added 11 points as well as providing an aggressive rebounding presence (19 rebounds).
Saturday night's win improves the Warriors' record to 7-1 on the season and a perfect 2-0 in SCC conference play. The team will resume action next Friday night (12/14) at Marmion Academy at 7:30 PM.
