Aurora, IL—Gordon Behr scored a career-high 25 points in Tuesday night's SCC game at Aurora Christian. Looking for their first road victory of the season, Wheaton Academy opened up the game showing terrific offensive patience, converting on 9 of their first 12 possessions, and 17 of 29 total first half possessions (59%). They outscored the Eagles 19-9 in the first quarter and led 33-19 at the half, thanks in part to
Jake Cousins' 10 first half points and
Gabe Partain's 8 first half points.
The tempo shifted in the second half, but still towards the Warriors strengths. After running patient half court offensive in to begin the game, the second half was a marathon of fast break action. Wheaton Academy scored 20 of their 36 points off fast break situations, as
Collin Roy (3 points) and
Jake Cousins (14 points) continually found an open
Gordon Behr to finish on the run. Behr scored nine two point field goals in during this stretch.
With 3:00 remaining in the third, WA led 46-30, but the Eagles took advantage of a number of rushed shots and turnovers by WA and converted on the other end with back-to-back three pointers to make it a 62-47 game with 5:07 left in the fourth quarter. For the first time in the night, this one-sided game seemed in reach for the Eagles.
Wheaton Academy regained their offensive composure in the remaining minutes and went to the free throw line to seal the deal 69-54 and tally up their second SCC win of the year. The Warriors are now 6-1 this season and 2-0 in conference play.
Gordon Behr led all scores with 25 points, followed
Jake Cousins with 14, and
Gabe Partain and
Brandon Ruggles with 10 a piece.
The Warriors next game will be Saturday night at Aurora Central Catholic at 7:30 PM.
