Paul Ferguson Returns to Wheaton Academy as Head Boys Basketball Coach

Wheaton Academy is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Ferguson as Head Coach of its boys' basketball program. Ferguson is a leader known for his Christ-centered commitment to discipleship, relational investment, and transformational development.

He brings an aligned vision for Wheaton Academy athletics—one that prioritizes shaping young men into Christ-followers, servant leaders, and competitors of character.

"Paul stood out immediately because of his heart for discipleship and his alignment with the mission of Wheaton Academy," said Athletic Director Brad Byrne. "He understands that success in our program goes far beyond wins and losses—it's about who our athletes become."

A Meaningful Return

This appointment marks a meaningful return to Wheaton Academy, where Ferguson previously served as Head Varsity Basketball Coach from 2006–2013. During that time, he also contributed as Athletic Director, Director of Admissions, and teacher.

Ferguson led one of the most successful eras in program history, compiling a 133–55 record. His teams captured IHSA Regional Championships in 2009 and 2011, won five conference titles, and set a school record with 27 wins during the 2010–2011 season. More importantly, was his lasting impact on his players.

Impact Through Players

Former players affirm Ferguson's influence and impact both on and off the court.

Tim Rusthoven (WA '10, William & Mary '14) shared:

"I'm thrilled for Wheaton Academy to welcome back Coach Ferguson! He developed me tremendously as a player and more importantly as a man of God. His college connections and knowledge of the system played a big role in helping me have the opportunity to play Division I basketball. Coach Ferguson was the best and most well-rounded coach I ever played for and I'm so excited that he is returning to WA!"

Rusthoven went on to play four years at William & Mary from 2010–2014, serving as a team captain and earning all-conference recognition

Josh Ruggles (WA '15, Loras College '19) shared:

"I couldn't be more excited for current and future Wheaton Academy basketball players who will get the chance to play for Coach Ferg. There's no better leader of young men. Playing for him changed my life - while he's always been driven to win, he's always cared even more about his players' growth as young men in their relationship with Christ. Wheaton Academy's basketball program is in the best hands possible!"

Ruggles went on to become a standout collegiate player at Loras, earning conference honors and finishing his career among the program's top performers.

Continued Excellence in Coaching

Following his time at Wheaton Academy, Ferguson served as Head Coach at Columbus North High School (IN) from 2015 to 2026, compiling a 156–101 record and an overall head coaching mark of 289–156. His teams won 4A Sectional Championships in 2023 and 2026.

Earlier in his career, Ferguson served at Wheaton College as Assistant Men's Basketball Coach and Recruiting Coordinator from 1999–2006. He holds a B.A. from the University of Notre Dame, along with graduate degrees from Aurora University and Wheaton College.

A Shared Mission

Ferguson expressed his excitement about returning:

"Wheaton Academy has played a significant role in my life and calling. Michelle and I are thrilled to return to the school and community… Wheaton Academy is an exceptional school with a rich history of excellence in education, athletics, and discipleship, and we are excited to be part of that mission once again. To God be the glory."

He added:

"Brad and I began coaching together nearly 20 years ago at WA, and we share many of the same philosophies on building a program. I believe strongly in his vision for the basketball and athletic programs and am excited to partner with him again."

What Others Are Saying
