Winter Sports Recap (12/27-1/1)

January 2nd, 2022- 

Boys Basketball:

In game one of the East Aurora Holiday Christmas Tournament, the boys took on Neuqua Valley. Neuqua Valley ran out to an early lead and never looked back as they would go on to take the win 69-46. The loss dropped the boys to 5-5 on the season. In game two of the tournament, the boys battled Chicago Clemente. They were able to jump on them early leading to a big 66-37 victory, bringing their record to 6-5 on the season. With less than an hour turn around WA then took on Plainfield Central. It was a back and forth game that needed two overtimes to determine a winner but ultimately Plainfield Central came out on top 77-74.  The loss dropped the Warriors back to .500 on the year at 6-6. Needing a win to stay alive in the consolation bracket of the tournament the Warriors took on Chicago Clemente again and the result was the same as the Warriors got the win 52-24. The win brought the Warriors to 7-6 and gave them a spot in the 3rd place game. In the third-place game, WA took on tournament host East Aurora. The Warriors were able to finish the tournament on a high with a 58-48 win and a third-place finish. They finished the tournament 3-2. Their overall record is now 8-6 on the season. They return home Tuesday, 1/4, to take on Chicago Ogden inside the Warrior Dome at 7:30PM.

 

The sophomore boys basketball team also had a successful holiday tournament at East Aurora going 2-1 with wins over Oak Forest and Marmion to also claim a third place finish.

The freshman boys participated in the Plainfield East Holiday Tournament. There they went 2-1 with wins over Burlington Central and Joliet West. They finished the tournament as champions of the consolation bracket.


Girls Basketball:

12/27 vs Antioch (Lisle Tournament): The WA girls basketball team took on Antioch High School in the opening round of the Lisle Christmas Tournament. The girls dug themselves in an early hole as they trailed 19-10 at half time. Heading to the final quarter WA found themselves down 15. A spirited comeback came up short as WA fell 37-30.  Jillian Paulson lead the team with 14 of their 30 points. The loss drops them to 5-3 on the season.

 

12/28 vs Plano (Lisle Tournament): The girls bounced back on day two of the tournament with a big win vs Plano High School 42-16. Defense was the story of the day as WA held Plano to under 5 points in three of the four quarters. Emma Tate led the Warriors with 11 points while Jillian Paulson and Olivia Rinde both chipped in 9 of their own. The win was the girls 6th of the season and brings their record to 6-3.

 

12/29 vs Reed Custer (Lisle Tournament): In game three of the Lisle High School Holiday Tournament the girls fell in a tough defensive battle to Reed Custer 21-17. The girls gave up 11 of the 21 points in the first quarter and were able hold RC to under 5 points in each of the final three frames. Unfortunately the offense couldn't get going enough to close the gap. Jillian Paulson led the Warriors with 11 of their 17 total points. The loss drops the girls record to 6-4 on the season.

 

12/30 vs Coal City (Lisle Tournament): The girls basketball team concluded play at the Lisle Christmas tournament on Thursday when they took on Coal City. The defense came out strong for the Warriors as they were able to hold Coal City to zero first quarter points and just six total for the half giving WA a 10 point halftime lead. Coal City dominated the third quarter scoreboard and was able to pull within two points going to the 4th quarter. It was a back and forth final quarter but WA was able to hold on for the three point victory 41-38. The win was their 7th of the season and their record now stands at 7-4. Jillian Paulson led all Warriors with 21 points in 27 minutes played. The girls return home on Thursday January 6th when they host Ridgewood in MSC conference play. 

 

Wrestling:

12/30 vs Belvidere North: Wheaton Academy opened up the quad by hosting Belvidere North. In a tightly contested battle against a strong team WA battled hard. With each team forfeiting only one class there were many battles on the day. The Warriors got pins from Will Hupke, Hunter Kazmierzak, and Peter Johanik. Ultimately it wasn't enough as WA fell 53- 24 and dropped it's record in 7-4 on the season.

 

12/30 vs Waukegan: Waukegan was only able to field four wrestlers leading many of their weight classes to be forfeit victories for the Warriors. For those that wrestled they were successful. Will Hupke, Caden Smith and Will Anliker all pinned their opponents to lead the way to victory. WA was able to win the match 60-6. The Warriors victory brings their record to 8-4.


12/30 vs Nazareth Academy: In the final match of the day WA took on Nazareth Academy. Nazareth was only able to field six wrestlers but was able to get two pins from their six. The Warriors got pins from Will Hupke and Ethan Brunner and also got an exciting come from behind overtime victory from Daniel Kersey to help lead the way to the win 45-12. The win brings the Warriors to 9-4 on the year. They are off until January 14th and 15th when they will travel to Reed Custer for their two-day invitational.
