Sets Personal Best in 1600m Run

The track season came to a close as junior Mike DeRenzo competed in the IHSA state preliminaries on Friday afternoon. In the race, Mike set a personal best time of 4:36 for the 1600m run. In an extremely fast preliminary heat, Mike ran with some of the best runners in the state to run a 3:21 for the first 1200m.

On Saturday, both Sarah Daly and Sarah Dede competed in the IHSA Girls Track and Field State Finals. After jumping a personal best of 16-11.25 Friday morning, Sarah Dede came back on Saturday and competed in the final flight of long jump. At the end of the day, Sarah finished 10th in Class 2A in the long jump. The 16-11.25 that she jumped on Friday also set the school record, breaking the previous record held by Maggie Ritchie from 2001.

school career on Saturday afternoon, running the 3200m and finishing 6th in the race. On a very warm, humid day, Sarah set a personal best time of 11:33.84 for the race. In finishing in 6th place, Sarah became only the second girl in WA history to take all state honors in both cross country and track in the same season. For her career, Sarah finished being the 2-time PSL 2-mile champion, set the Wheaton Acacdemy Conference record with a time of 11:35.12, 2-time Benet Invitational Champion, the most career sub-12 minute 2 miles (6 times) and holds 6 of the fasted 2 miles ever run at Wheaton Academy.

DeRenzo Qualifies for State, Dede Advances to Final

The Warrior track team continued in it's successful ways on Friday. Early in the morning, Senior Sarah Dede competed in the long jump preliminaries at the Girls State Track Finals, and she jumped a personal best 16-11.25. That jump set a personal best for her, and advanced her to the long jump final on Saturday morning. Also competing on Saturday will be senior Sarah Daly in the 3200m run. After winning the Sectional last week, Daly looks to place in the top 9 and be one of only the second athlete in WA history be named All-State in both cross country and track. Follow both Sarah Daly and Sarah Dede on the IHSA website as they compete in the State Final. From the boys side, Mike DeRenzo became the first guy since 2005 to qualify for the state race. Mike won the Glenbard South sectional in a time of 4:38 and will compete on early next Friday afternoon at the state race in Charleston, IL.

After the Girls Track Sectional was postponed on Friday night due to weather, Sarah Daly and Sarah Dede made the most of the conditions on Saturday afternoon. Sarah Dede started the day off by jumping 16 feet, 7.5 inches - a personal best for her. This was good enough for second place in the sectional and an automatic place in the state preliminaries, which take place Friday morning. Sarah Daly competed in the 2 mile and ran under the qualifying standard of 11:54 to advance to the state final. Her time on the windy day was an 11:52. Sarah will compete in the finals of the 2 mile to be contested on Saturday.

On Friday night, the Warrior Track and Field team competed at the 17 team Chicago Christian Invitataional. Led by Sarah Daly and her individual titles in the 3200m run (11:46 - personal best) and 1600m run (5:34 - season best), the Warriors pushed to a top 10 finish. Also highlighting the day was the boys 4x800 team running a season best 8:46 (Mike DeRenzo 2:07, Seb Spivey 2:10, Sammy Spivey 2:16, Shai Weinstein 2:13), Anna Curato's season best 2:36 800m run, Wes Killian's 59.3 second 400, and Alex Backart's 6th place finish in the discus.

Run Tough in Windy Weather

The Wheaton Academy Girls Track team competed at Rosary on a windy Monday. The girls had a strong showing in several events. The 4x800 team finished second with a time of 11:36, and Hannah Huff finished second in the 1600m run. Bethany Killian led the Warrior Sprinters with a 71 second 400m dash. The ladies will next compete at the eight team Benet Invitational next Wednesday.

The Track and Field team participated in their first large invitational of the season - the 16 team Seneca Fighting Irish Invitational. Top peformances include

Sarah Daly's 11:55 3200m run, followed by a 5:38 1600m run
Kent Smith's 10:28 3200m run
Shai Weinstein's 4:54 1600m run
Wes Killian's 59.74 400m dash

The girls will next race on Monday at the Rosary Invitational, and the Boys will run on Tuesday at Montini.
