Gagliano Named 3A All-State by ICA

Posted: 6/28/2011

The Illinois Coaches Association has named Wheaton Academy freshman shortstop Marissa Gagliano to its all-state third team in class 3A. Gagliano joins former standout pitcher Lauren Chessum (Class A all-state in '03 and '04) in becoming only the second softball player in Wheaton Academy history to be named to an all-state team by the ICA. Gagliano was one of only three freshmen named to an all-state team in 3A, joining fellow Wasco Diamonds teammate Bekah Harnish (Burlington Central, 2nd team) and Karlie Mellott (Sterling, 3rd team). The ICA names very few freshmen to any of its softball teams as a combined total of only six freshmen were recognized in classes 2A, 3A, and 4A. "This is just a tremendous credit to Marissa and how hard she works," said WA head coach Todd Starowitz. "While she also plays varsity basketball, softball is a year-round passion for Moe. She has been extremely well taught by Bill Morrow and the entire Wasco Diamonds travel organization, which is one of the very best in Illinois if not the country. Her parents, Natalie and Paul, along with her younger sister, Meghan, are wonderfully supportive as well. The thing that excites me most is Marissa is an incredible teammate. She is a highly accomplished player yet she is always willing to help her teammates improve, which is critical for an emerging program. She is truly selfless." Gagliano had one of the finest single seasons in Wheaton Academy softball history in 2011. In 23 games, she hit .474 with eight doubles, two triples, and four home runs. She recorded an on-base percentage of .564 and a slugging percentage of .782. She also stole 25 bases in 26 attempts. She missed the final two weeks of the season and the entire IHSA playoffs with a significant ankle injury. With the all-state honors from the ICA, Gagliano will also be recognized on the prestigious Wheaton Academy Hall of Honor.

Softball Drops Regional Final to Ridgewood

Posted: 5/28/2011

Fifth-seeded Wheaton Academy lost 14-4 to fourth-seeded Ridgewood in the championship game of the Wheaton Academy Regional in IHSA Class 3A action. Catcher Katie Serpico supplied the big blow when she hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the third inning that broke open a 7-4 game. Wheaton Academy grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when junior second baseman Caitlin Koehler reached on an infield hit and junior centerfielder Jordyn Hoepner reached on a bunt single. After a walk to load the bases, junior shortstop Bekah Heubner hit a sharply hit ground ball through the middle that shortstop Nikki Wagner snagged behind the bag and retired Heubner at first. Koehler scored on the play. After freshman leftfielder Sarah McClain drew a walk to again load the bases, Ridgewood pitcher Alyssa Allegretti then retired the next two hitters to get out of the jam. Ridgewood answered with five runs in the bottom of the first. The big blow was a two-run home run by Mallory McCormack. WA answered with three runs of its own in the top of the second to pull to within 5-4 but the Rebels scored two runs in the bottom of the second and added four more in the third. Allegretti kept the Warriors in check for the remainder of the game as only junior Emily Hillstrom recorded a hit over the final four innings. The game closed the careers of seniors Paige Huizenga and Jenna Clancy. They have both made wonderful contributions to the Wheaton Academy softball program and will be missed.

Freshman Standout Gagliano Lost for Season

Posted: 5/19/2011

Wheaton Academy freshman softball standout Marissa Gagliano has been lost for the season after sustaining ligament damage in her ankle during the second inning of Tuesday's 7-6 loss vs. Aurora Central Catholic. She is expected to be in a walking boot for three weeks. Gagliano had one of the finest single seasons in Wheaton Academy softball history in 2011. In 23 games, she hit .474 with eight doubles, two triples, and four home runs. She recorded an on-base percentage of .564 and a slugging percentage of .782. She also stole 25 bases in 26 attempts. "Marissa is an absolute warrior and a fantastic softball player," said head coach Todd Starowitz. "It's somewhat fitting that she homered in her final at-bat of the season and hurt herself diving after a ball that was well into left field. She wouldn't even come out of the game until the inning was complete. Everyone had very high expectations for Marissa as a freshman this spring and she far exceeded all of those. She has an extremely bright future. I feel very badly for her." Gagliano plays travel softball for the Wasco Diamonds, one of the elite travel programs in Illinois.

Gearing Up for Softball Season

Posted: 3/10/2011

After recording only its tenth 15-win season in the 30-year history of the program last spring, and notching IHSA tournament victories in each of the last two years, Wheaton Academy softball will look to take another step forward in 2011. Moving ahead won't be easy as the Warriors will look to replace six starters who contributed heavily to last year's success, including catcher Olivia Tilly, an all-SCC selection and one of the finest softball players in the history of Wheaton Academy. WA will also be looking to do so while competing for only its second season in the challenging Suburban Christian Conference (SCC). WA will face what many observers believe is the most demanding schedule in the history of the program. Wheaton Academy will be coached by Todd Starowitz, who is entering his third year with the program. He will be assisted by second-year assistant Libby Thompson.
