West Chicago, IL. -
We are excited to announce the hiring of Tory Gum to lead our girls' basketball program at Wheaton Academy. Tory will be replacing Coach Beth Mitchell, who announced her retirement from coaching last week. Tory will continue in his full-time role at Wheaton College where he serves as the Regional Director of Development.
Â
Tory and his wife, Sandy, are no strangers to the WA community. The Gums' oldest daughters, Alexa and Lauren, attended Wheaton Academy, while Jordan (junior) and Abi (freshman) currently attend. Their youngest daughter, Shawna, is in eighth grade and plans to attend Wheaton Academy next year. The Gums have also served as host parents for students in the Wheaton Academy International Student Program. Additionally, both Tory and Sandy have served on the executive committee of the Warrior Booster Club, and Sandy manages the WA Spirit store located in the Heritage Fieldhouse.
Â
Prior to his current position at Wheaton College, Tory served in a variety of roles at Judson University from 1990-2013. He was the women's basketball coach at Judson for 15 of those years; he led the Eagles to the NAIA national tournament five times, recorded seven 20-win seasons, had 11 consecutive winning seasons from 1994-2005, and amassed a total of 268 career wins. During his time at Judson, Gum coached nine different All-Americans, eight Academic All-Americans, and nine Judson Female Athletes of the Year. He retired from coaching at Judson in 2005 as the demands of coaching and recruiting were too difficult to manage with his growing family. In 2007 Tory was named to the Judson University Hall of Fame. As impressive as his accolades are, Coach Gum is quick to point out, "My first desire was that each player would come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and grow in that relationship with him as a result of her time in our program at Judson."

Dr. Jerry Cain, Judson University Chancellor, said, "I have the highest regard for Tory Gum. He is extremely knowledgeable and is an excellent teacher of the game…(H)e will be an excellent addition to the strong programs at Wheaton Academy."
