Johnson signs to play for Belmont 11.19.07 :: Girls Volleyball :: Posted at 11:51 AM Senior standout Maggie Johnson recently signed her letter of intent to play volleyball next year at NCAA Division 1 Belmont University in Nashville, TN. Regional Champions 10.29.07 :: Girls Volleyball :: Posted at 7:15 PM The Wheaton Academy girls volleyball team made quick work of Chicago Jaurez to open up regional play on Saturday afternoon with a 25-7, 25-12 win. In just over an hour, the girls returned to action to face Montini Catholic for the Regional Championship. The Warriors beat Montini in two games, 25-19, and 25-21 to win the regional title. Wheaton Academy coach D.A. Nichols said Maggie Johnson, whose hip and knee have been giving her trouble, was at 75 percent, while her partner on the outside, Shelby Vischer, was slowed by an infection. PSL Tournament Results Warriors tip Batavia in marathon match Girls Volleyball defeats Batavia 8.30.07 :: Girls Volleyball :: Posted at 8:33 AM Daily Herald Maggie Johnson is the leader on Wheaton Academy's girls volleyball team -- and it was easy to see why on Tuesday. Johnson, a 4-year varsity player, tallied a match-high 15 kills along with 8 digs and 3 aces, leading the Warriors to a 25-21, 24-26, 28-26 nonconference win over Batavia on the road in both teams' first outing of the season. "It's always on me to show leadership," Johnson said. "It's not just in the tough games. You have to be on every game no matter what. If they look to me to get a kill, I'm OK with that because that's what my job is." Johnson, an outside hitter, was fierce in the crucial Game 3. A couple days after checking out Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., Johnson verbally committed to play for the Bruins beginning in 2008. “I just loved it,” said Johnson, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter who will be a senior at Wheaton Academy. “I knew it was the right place.” Johnson said Belmont saw her play for the Sports Performance Volleyball Club in the Power League at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora before watching her again in a March tournament in Indianapolis. The high-flying hitter visited Belmont with her mom, Lynne, during a weekend break in Sports Performance’s schedule. Johnson waited to return home so she could talk with her dad, Walter, about her decision. But Johnson knew Belmont was the school for her during her visit.
