Welton scores point for WA at State Tournament!

After a tough loss in the first round, Lexi Welton came back with a great win for Wheaton Academy in the Consolation Bracket of the IHSA State Tennis Tournament. Welton won 6-3, 7-5 over Glenbrook North HS after coming back from an 0-4 deficit in the second set. It was a great win, which concludes a fantastic season for Welton. Unfortunately, after weather held up too many matches on the day, Lexi will not have a chance to advance any further because the IHSA has cancelled all consolation bracket matches. Lexi's win marks the first point scored in the State Tournament for Girl's Tennis in school history! Congratulations to Lexi on a great season!

 

Girl's Tennis 4th in Sectional, Welton on to State

The Warriors finished their team season with their best ever finish in a sectional. They finished 4th place behind girl's tennis powerhouses Bartlett, St. Charles North, and Geneva. It was a great team effort that featured a great win by Larson against DeKalb, and a dominant win by Sedjo/Schiff against a great Geneva team. Lexi Welton advances to the State Tournament for the 2nd straight year finishing in 3rd place in Singles. She also gave a major scare to #1 seed and previously undefeated Jen Gates from Bartlett. After falling behind 0-3, Welton took a 5-4 lead in the first set before eventually falling 5-7, 2-6. It was an exceptional display of her ability against one of the best players in the State! Congratulations to the Warriors on an oustanding season!!

 

Girl's Tennis finishes runner-up in Conference

After starting the day in 3rd place, the Warriors played some of their best tennis of the season to move up and finish 2nd in conference behind St. Francis. Congratulations to Lexi Welton, who knocked off #1 seeded Lexi Chionis from Chicago Christian with a dominating 6-1, 6-2 victory in the championship match at 1st Singles. The win was especially sweet after Chionis had beaten Welton twice last year. Sedjo/Schiff won their first two matches convincingly, and then finished 2nd in conference after losing to an excellent Rosary team in the championship match for 1st Doubles. Cislo/Jones started the day as the # 3 seed, but knocked off #2 seeded Rosary in a fantastic semi-final match at 2nd Doubles. They lost a hard fought 3-set marathon match to St. Francis in the finals to finish in 2nd place. The Warriors have much to be proud of. The girl's played their hearts out and finished tied with St. Francis for the highest point total of any team for the tournament! Congratulations to the Varsity Girl's tennis team on a great conference season!

 

JV Girls Tennis Places 3rd at Conference

The Warriors played hard against tough competition to finish 3rd in the SCC Conference Tournament. The Warriors were 1 point behind Rosary who finished second. The Warriors had a great season, finishing with an overall record of 10-1. In individual conference tournament results, sophomore Laura Vento lead the way finishing 2nd place at #3 Singles. Vento lost in a close 11-9 match in which she played her best tennis of the season. At #1 Singles, sophomore Kylie Hultgren played a fantastic match, but lost 11-9 in the semi-finals to a talented player from Immaculate Conception. At #2 Singles, sophomore Sarah Jagrowski had a commendable performance, losing 10-4 to Rosary. In #1 Doubles freshmen Taylor Scheffers and Josie Garrett had a difficult loss to Chicago Christian in the semi-finals. At #2 Doubles, freshmen Ingrid Brorson and Grace Todd played their hearts out and lost to Rosary in a tie-breaker 11-10 (7-5). All in all, the Warriors have had an excellent season with lots of steady improvement and great tennis experience for the girls!

 

JV Tennis Beats Montini

The JV tennis team won against Montini 5-0. The Warriors are now gearing up for the SCC Conference Tournament on Friday at St. Francis. The Warriors won the Conference Championship in 2010 and are hoping to win it again. In the match tonight against Montini, the girls played well with #1 Singles player Kylie Hultgren winning 10-3 and #2 Singles player Sarah Jagrowski winning 10-2. In Doubles, Taylor Scheffers and Josie Garrett pulled out a nice win 10-5 and Grace Todd and Ingrid Brorson also won a good match 10-5. In exhibition, Laura Vento won 6-4 and Tara Leach/ Emily Frost won 6-2.

 

Girls Tennis Wins Last Conference Match

Despite a slow start on several courts, the Warriors bounced back and had 5 solid wins to defeat Montini 5-0 in their last match of the season. The Warriors are now looking to defend their title as the SCC Conference Champions on Saturday at the SCC Conference Tournament (held at St. Francis). Against Montini, #1 Singles Lexi Welton and #2 Singles Lizzy Larson didn't waste any time, winning won 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively. At #1 Doubles, Eva Sedjo and Mackenzie Schiff won 6-4, 6-2. At #2 Doubles,Val Cislo and Betsy Jones won 6-0, 6-0. At #3 Doubles, Grace Xander and Abby Gasick won 6-1, 6-1. Melissa Snyder and Katy Banks also had a nice 6-0 win in exhibition doubles.

 

Girl's Tennis sweeps Walther

The Warriors started an important conference week with a 5-0 sweep against Walther Lutheran. Matches were highlighted by Welton (1s), Sedjo/Schiff (1d), and Gasick/Xander (3d), who only lost a single game between all three matches! Great wins as well from Larson (2s) and Jones/Cislo (2d), and a solid exhibition win by Banks/Snyder.

 

JV Tennis Wins Against Walther

Due to small numbers, Walther Lutheran had to default 4 of the 5 matches. At #1 Doubles, Taylor Scheffers and Josie Garrett played well together to win solidly 10-1.

 

Girl's Tennis wins Glenbard North Quad!

For the 4th straight year, the Warriors have taken 1st Place in the Glenbard North Quad. The Warriors only lost two matches during the Quad to score 10 out of a possible 12 points for the victory. Huge congratulations go to Lizzy Larson, who stepped up to 1st singles and took 2nd place, and Grace Xander, who stepped up to 2nd singles and also took 2nd place. Both Doubles teams of Sedjo/Schiff and Cislo/Jones won all three matches and took home first place medals at 1st and 2nd Doubles. Another great team win for the Warriors!

 

JV Girls' Tennis Gains Another 5-0 Win

The Warriors followed up a 5-0 win last night with another 5-0 win! This conference win against Marian Central Catholic makes the Warriors 5-1 in conference. Singles players Kylie Hultgren, Sarah Jagrowski, and Laura Vento did not waste any time, winning 10-0, 10-1, and 10-2 respectively. The Doubles teams pulled out solid victories with Taylor Scheffers/Josie Garrett winning 10-4 and Ingrid Brorson/Grace Todd winning 10-2.

 

Girl's Tennis pulls out conference win over Marian

The Warriors needed to pull out one of two three-set matches to secure the win. Instead the Warrior 2nd and 3rd Doubles teams won both matches to give the team a 4-1 win over Marian Central. It was a great win for the Warriors who move to 4-2 in the conference and 8-2 overall. Sedjo/Schiff continued their fantastic play at 1st Doubles with a 6-1, 6-3 win. Welton played oustanding tennis at 1st singles against a really nice freshman player to win 6-2, 6-0. Cislo/Jones and Xander/Gasick both dominated the 3rd set of their matches to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 and 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 respectively. It was a great conference win for the Warriors.

 

JV Girls' Tennis Sweeps Trinity

Recovering well from a tough loss to St. Francis yesterday, the Warriors swept Trinity today 5-0. At #1 Singles, Kylie Hultgren closed out a great victory 9-7. At #2 Singles, Sarah Jagrowski didn't drop a game, winning 8-0. The #1 Doubles team of Taylor Scheffers and Josie Garrett won 8-2. At #2 doubles, Laura Vento and Grace Todd played together for the first time and won 8-1. In #3 Doubles competition, Tara Leach and Ingrid Brorson had a come from behind win 8-6.

 

Girl's Tennis beats Trinity

The Warriors rebounded nicely from a tough loss against St. Francis with a dominant win against Trinity 4-1. Great wins for Welton 6-0, 6-0, Sedjo/Schiff 6-0, 6-2, and a great birthday win for Melissa Snyder, who stepped into the line-up for a big win with partner Val Cislo 6-0, 6-1.

 

JV Girls' Tennis Loses to St. Francis

The JV girls' tennis team lost several close matches, including two in tiebreakers. This was the Warriors first loss of the season, but the Warriors will get to face St. Francis again in the conference tournament on Oct. 7th. Two noteworthy matches were at #1 Singles and #2 Doubles. At #1 Singles Kylie Hultgren battled hard, but lost in a tiebreaker. At #2 Doubles Grace Todd and Ingrid Brorson played a very solid match, also losing in a close tiebreaker.

 

Girl's Tennis comes up short against St. Francis

The Warriors were unable to pull out a 3rd victory against a deep St. Francis team and ended with a very close 3-2 loss. It was a disappointing loss, but the two big wins still give the Warriors a strong chance to contend for the conference championship in a few weeks. Congratulations to Lexi Welton who won 6-0, 6-4 at 1st singles, and also to Sedjo/Schiff who won 6-3, 6-4 at 1st Doubles.

 

Girl's Tennis wins close match against Timothy

The return of 1st singles player Lexi Welton and strong play of their 1st and 2nd Doubles teams resulted in another great home win for the Warriors. Welton started off rusty but regained form as the match went on for a 6-3, 6-0 win. Sedjo/Schiff also overcame a slow start to finish strong 6-4, 6-0 at 1st Doubles. Cislo/Jones pulled out the decisive win at 2nd doubles 6-3, 6-4.

 

Warriors Outplay Timothy Christian

The JV girls' tennis team performed well to beat Timothy Christian, winning 4-2. The match of the night was at #3 Doubles- Emily Frost and Tara Leach overcame a 3-8 deficit to win their match 10-8! #2 Singles player Sarah Jagrowski pulled out a nice victory 10-8. #1 Singles player Kylie Hultgren won 10-1, and #3 Singles player Laura Vento also dominated, winning 10-0. The Warriors face off against a tough conference opponent tomorrow at St. Francis.

 

JV Girls' Tennis Adds Another Conference Win

The JV Girls' tennis team competed well to beat a strong conference opponent. The Warriors won 4 matches to Chicago Christian's 1 match. The Warriors are now 3-0 in conference competition. Sarah Jagrowski stepped up to #1 singles and won 10-4. Laura Vento, at #2 singles, closed out a nice win 10-8. At #1 Doubles Josie Garrett and Taylor Scheffers won 10-2. In #2 doubles Ingrid Brorson and Grace Todd had a quick win 10-1. Tara Leach played her first scored match of the year, and played very well, despite losing to 10-2. Emily Frost had an impressive 6-0 win in exhibition singles.

 

Girl's Tennis pulls out huge SCC win!

The Warriors showed some incredible toughness in a match that looked like it would result in a tough loss to a strong Chicago Christian Team. After losing both singles matches, the Warriors came back and won all three doubles matches. At 3rd Doubles Xander/Gasick came back from being down a set and 5-2 to pull out an incredible marathon win 6-7, 7-6, 7-5! It was the clinching match to seal the victory for the Warriors. 1st and 2nd doubles tandems Sedjo/Schiff and Cislo/Jones also played fantastic tennis to win 6-2, 7-5 and 6-2, 6-3 respectively. It was a great team win for the Warriors who keep their SCC Championship hopes alive!

 

Girl's Tennis beats ACC

The Warriors continued their winning ways at home with a convincing win over Aurora Central Catholic 4-1. Lizzy Larson came up big stepping into the 1st singles spot for the injured Welton with a 6-2, 6-1 victory! All three doubles teams played great with Sedjo/Schiff winning 6-2, 6-2, Jones/Cislo winning 6-0, 6-0, and Xander/Gasick winning 6-1, 6-0.

 

Girl's Tennis finishes 7th at Waubonsie Invite

The Warriors gained valuable experience playing some of the area's best tennis teams at the Waubonsie Valley Invitational Tournament. Snyder/Gasick at 4th Doubles, Scheffers at 4th Singles, and Hultgren at 3rd Singles had the Warrior's best results each finishing in 4th place. Welton's day was stopped short with a nagging back injury. The Warriors strong play against tough teams resulted in over 10 tie-breakers to decides sets or matches. Unfortunately only a few were converted into victories. Overall, it was a great experience for the team, as it faces the heart of the conference in the next few weeks.

 

Girl's Tennis sweeps St. Edward

The Warriors cruised to an easy victory against St. Edward sweeping the Green Wave 5-0. Welton at 1st Singles and Cislo/Jones at 2nd Doubles both dominated with 6-0, 6-0 wins. Sedjo /Schiff and Xander/Banks both won convincingly at 1st doubles and 3rd Doubles. Gasick/Snyder also contributed with a solid exhibition win at 4th Doubles 8-6!

 

Girl's Tennis places 2nd in Wheaton North Quad

The Warriors rebounded from a tough loss to Rosary with some outstanding tennis on Saturday amongst great competition. Playing against Wheaton North, Lemont and Hinsdale Central, the Warriors finished a close 2nd place behind Hinsdale Central. During the tournament the Warriors beat Wheaton North 6-2, and Lemont 7-1 before falling to Hinsdale 2-6. Welton dominated play at 1st singles only losing her first two games of the first match before winning 36 games in a row to finish off all of her opponents! Sedjo/Schiff took a great step forward with 2 wins at 1st Doubles against Lemont and Hinsdale. All players played some of their best tennis of the season resulting in the Warriors best finish at the tournament in Coach Visker's seven years!

The JV girls' tennis team triumphed over their first conference opponent, Rosary. The Warriors played well on every court winning 4 matches to 1. Kylie Hultgren won 10-5 in the #1 singles position. Laura Vento won 10-8 at #3 singles. In doubles competition, Taylor Scheffers and Josie Garrett had a big victory winning 10-8. At #2 doubles, Ingrid Brorson and Grace Todd won decisively 10-1.

The Warriors battled hard, but lost its opening conference match against perennial SCC power Rosary. The Royals control of net play was often the difference as the Warriors lost three very close matches at 2nd and 3rd doubles and 2nd singles. Congratulations to Lexi Welton for a dominating win at 1st Singles 6-0, 6-0!

 

Girls' Tennis Topples Lisle

The Warriors pulled out several close matches to defeat Lisle 4-1. The freshmen duo of Taylor Scheffers and Josie Garrett at #2 doubles had a come from behind victory, winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Kylie Hultgren secured another close win at #1 singles with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 10-3. Juniors Abby Gasick and Melissa Snyder had a solid win at #1 doubles, 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Ingrid Brorson and sophomore Laura Vento won decisively at #3 doubles with a 6-3, 6-0 win. All in all, it was a great day for Warrior tennis!

 

JV Tennis Opens Season with a Win

JV Girls Tennis had a solid season opener against Kaneland, beating the Knights in a close 3-2 match. Singles players Kylie Hultgren (#1), Sarah Jagrowski (#2), and Laura Vento (#3) provided three solid victories to seal the win. Freshman doubles teams Taylor Scheffers/Josie Garrett and Ingrid Brorson/Grace Todd competed hard in their first JV match with both teams losing 8-5. Other freshmen Emily Frost and Tara Leach won a close match 7-6 (5) in exhibition doubles.

The Warriors started the season well winning a very close match against Kaneland 3-2. Lexi Welton played great tennis against a tough freshman opponent winning 6-1, 6-2. 2nd Doubles tandem Cislo/Jones won convincingly 6-1, 6-2. 3rd Doubles duo Xander/Banks erased an early 1-4 deficit to win 6-4, 7-6 (7-0).

The Warriors started their season with some very strong competition from fellow Wheaton Schools. The Warriors placed 4th, but only 3 points out of 2nd place! Congratulations to Doubles tandems Welton/Larson and Hultgren/Jagrowski for each winning 2 of their 3 matches on the day.
