Sectional semi-final loss to St. Charles North

The Warriors fell to St. Charles North in the Sectional Semifinal at Wheaton North on Tuesday night. Both teams played well defensively, leading to a scoreless first half. In the first frame both teams had one great chance; in about the 10th minute, Wheaton Academy’s Alexa Sharkey had an open goal attempt that went just wide, while the North Stars had a shot ricochet off the post. In the 44th minute, St. Charles North was able to capitalize on a ball that was mishandled by the Warriors in the penalty box and Leah DeMoss buried it into the back of the net. In the closing minutes, Wheaton Academy continued to press, creating some dangerous scenarios that were all snuffed out by the stingy St. Charles defense. St. Charles North scored again as WA was pressing to try to score in the waning seconds with everyone pushed forward. “I am proud of the girls for a great effort tonight. St. Charles North played great, we had a hard time getting much going offensively," Dave Underwood said after his last game as soccer coach at Wheaton Academy. Wheaton Academy finishes the season with a record of 15-7-2.

Alexa Sharkey and Leah Fortune
The girls soccer team defeated York High School 3-1 on Friday night in the regional final game at St. Francis. The Dukes got on the board early in the 10th minute, when the ball bounced around the Wheaton Academy box and a York player was able to poke it toward goal. Emily Mulder got a hand on it, but not before the side official ruled it crossed the goal line. The Warriors didn’t dwell on the goal too long, as Alexa Sharkey got in deep behind the York defense and scored the equalizer two minutes later. Riding a new wave of momentum, the Warriors added a second goal in the 14th minute when Leah Fortune cracked a shot from 25 yards out that was blocked by York goalkeeper, Stef Matsas, only for Alexa Sharkey to follow it up and chip it over Matsas’ head. Jenn Lee got in on the action, capitalizing on another ball that was mishandled by Matsas and was able to walk the ball in for the third goal. For the remaining 60 minutes, York pressed, creating some good chances, but the Warrior defense proved to be too stingy, holding the Dukes to the one goal in the 10th minute.

“Tonight we played so well defensively. Emily Mulder was great, but I thought Rebecca Long and Christi Dithrich were phenomenal. They did a great job of keeping everything in front of them and playing the ball forward.”

The Warriors will face the Bartlett Regional winner in the Sectional Semi-final at Wheaton North on Tuesday night.

Becca Long deflects a St. Francis corner kick.
Tonight was a great match-up between St. Francis and Wheaton Academy. Both teams had some good chances in the first half, but both goalkeepers made some huge saves. The Warriors finally broke the dead-lock in the 65th minute when Leah Fortune received a ball with her back to the goal at the top of the penalty box, dribbled to her left, creating enough space to burry a shot into the lower right corner of the net. Fortune scored the insurance goal in the 76th minute off of a Christi Dithrich corner kick. “I thought we played well tonight. What a good, fun game to watch," Coach Underwood said.

The Warriors will face York on Friday night at 7:00 for the Regional championship at St. Francis.

Leah Fortune
After a disappointing loss last night, when the Warriors were unable to finish off Andrew after being ahead most of the game, Wheaton Academy proved that they had learned a lesson. The Warriors took an early lead when Leah Fortune found the back of the net in the 6th minute. After trading goals a couple of times in the second half, it looked for a minute that maybe Wheaton Academy was heading for a repeat of last night; however, Leah Fortune took the game over and lead Wheaton Academy to a convincing win over Lyons Township. “Leah showed great leadership tonight, not only by scoring a hat trick and adding an assist, but the other girls fed off of her energy. It really was a fun game to watch,” said Underwood. The Warriors are now 13-6-1. Their next game is tomorrow night at West Chicago at 6:30.

For the fourth time this year, the Warriors found themselves down 2-0 in the first 15 minutes of the game. “We played pretty well for 60 minutes, unfortunately, the game was decided in the first 20 minutes,” coach Underwood said. "We gave a great effort getting back in the game, we just can’t afford to go down that much, that early to a great team like Wheaton Warrenville South.” Jenn Lee played extremely well in the losing effort, getting the Warriors on the board near the end of the first half. Her hustle all game created a number of great opportunities. Rebecca Long did a nice job for Wheaton Academy in the middle in the second half as well.Dithrich assisted on both goals. The Warriors' record is 10-5-1. Their next game is Saturday in the PSL tourney at Timothy Christian.

The girls soccer team pulled out a 3-1 victory over University High of Chicago on Thursday night at home under the lights. After Wheaton Academy scored two goals, the game looked as if it was going to be a blowout, but U-High stayed in the game. Starters Natalie Cullen and Becca Long both sat out the majority of the game due to injuries incurred on the field. "We got pretty banged up tonight, we had two starters sitting out much of the game with injuries, but Kristine Egebrecht stepped in and did a nice job for us in the back," Coach Underwood commented. The team will travel tomorrow to Wisconsin for their 6:30 PM game tomorrow night against West Bend East High School.

Becca Long and Tatum Teevans
Despite having a heavy wind in their face, Geneva scored early in the 7th minute of the game; however, Tatum Teevans responded with a goal for the Warriors in the 11th minute when she shot a bomb from 20 yards out for the equalizer. With the wind at their backs Wheaton Academy was able to keep the pressure on the Geneva defense, but was unable to capitalize and went in to half at 1-1. With the wind at their backs in the second half, Geneva had a barrage of shots and kept heavy pressure on the Warriors, but despite the wind, Wheaton Academy was able to counter and Leah Fortune slotted a great ball to Freshman Lindsey Burke who was able to get behind the Viking defense and chipped a beautiful shot into the upper corner of the net in the 76th minute. The Warriors withstood three more Geneva corner kicks in the closing minutes to seal the 2-1 win. “This was a game of halves, whoever had the wind had the upper hand. For us to score against the wind in the closing minutes was awesome. I am so happy for Lindsey Burke and our girls; for her to score a game winning goal as a freshman against a team like Geneva is incredible," Coach Underwood said. The Warriors are 6-3 on the season and their next game is Thursday at home vs. U-High.
