Witt added to the lead a few minutes later by beating two defenders down the right wing after receiving a pass from Crystal Thomas. Lady Warriors Win Wheaton Cup Kick Off Regionals on Monday Posted on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 @ 5:28 am The Wheaton Academy Girls' soccer team completed their sweep of the Wheaton Cup Friday night with a 3-0 Senior Night victory over St. Francis. This marks the first time in the history of the competition that Wheaton Academy has won the Cup. The Warriors took the lead early, when Crystal Thomas found Leah Fortune just inside of the box for their first connection of the night. Fortune beat the keeper with a low, driven ball to give Wheaton Academy a 1-0 edge after just 5 minutes of play. The Warriors wasted little time adding to their lead, as Thomas again found Fortune who beat two defenders and put her shot off of the bottom of the crossbar from 24 yards out. In the second half, the pair connected for a third time- Thomas beating two defenders inside the box and laying a ball at Fortune's feet 8 yards out for the final goal of the night. The Warriors saw other chances from Meghan Grant, Kristen Wittmuss, and Katelyn Rougas just miss their marks. Defensively, the Warriors only allowed 4 shots on goal on the night. Warriors Tie Andrew HS
Posted on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 @ 6:14 am The Wheaton Academy Girls' Soccer team drove their unbeaten streak to 8 games with a 1-1 draw at Andrew High School Tuesday evening. The Warriors lacked their typical edge in the first half, and went down 0-1 by the break. The girls came alive to start the second half, and Meghan Grant equalized the match with a goal from 12 yards out. It looked as though the Warriors would blow the game wide open as they continued to press and quickly put two shots just over the crossbar. Ten minutes into the second half, the flow of the game disappeared, as frequent whistles, throw-ins, and goal kicks seemed to consume the remaining time. Neither team was able to get much going over the final 30 minutes of the game. The Warriors will look to get back to their winning ways Thursday night at 6:30pm against West Chicago. The match will be played at Wheaton Academy. Warriors Defeat Falcons Win First Two Games of Wheaton Cup Posted on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 @ 6:00am The Wheaton Academy Girls' Soccer Team began their final week of the regular season Monday with a 4-1 win over Wheaton North. Crystal Thomas closed out the first half scoring for WA, getting on the end of a Leah Fortune direct kick to push the lead to 4-0. Wheaton North wrapped up the scoring for the match with a goal 10 minutes in to the second half. Becca Long and Jenn Lee controlled the middle of the field for the Warriors, and Christi Dithrich, Lindsey Burke, and Kerrin Clancy locked down North's trio of strikers- allowing only three shots on goal. Emily Mulder had two saves in net. The Warriors move to 13-3-1 on the season, and play at Andrew Tuesday night. Warriors Defeat Tigers Strong Outing Against Wheaton Warrenville South Posted on Saturday, May 6, 2009 @ 9:38 am The Wheaton Academy Girls' Soccer Team is beginning to click! Playing in only their third game of the season with their entire roster, the Warriors defeated Wheaton-Warrenville South on the road Tuesday night by a score of 2-1. Wheaton Academy's game plan included a high pressure start to the match, and they delivered, as Ally Witt scored the opening goal in the first minute of play. Witt outran a WW-S defender and slipped a Crystal Thomas pass into the back of the net. Neither team backed down, and the majority of the match was fought through the middle third of the field. Both squads produced solid scoring chances late in the first half, but WA held a 1-0 lead at the break. The second half saw an even faster pace, as both teams continued to play attacking styles. Leah Fortune put away the game-winner for the Warriors when she got on the end of a Christi Dithrich through ball, and beat the keeper with a classy finish. The Tigers never let down, as they scored a goal with 45 seconds remaining in the match to bring the score to 2-1. WWS scored a second goal before the final whistle, but the goal was ruled to have been scored after the clock had run out. The final minute of the match will be a great lesson for the Warriors about playing through the final whistle. The ladies are back in action Wednesday night against Chicago Christian. Kick-off is at 6:30 at HOME. Benet countered and scored with 30 seconds remaining in the second half to put the game out of reach. Emily Mulder recorded 13 saves for the Warriors. The girls are back in action Tuesday night with a home PSL match against Chicago Christian at 6:15pm. The Warriors put on their most consistent performance of the season, playing a solid match from start to finish. WA controlled the tempo for the majority of the game, and created a handful of quality scoring opportunities. Defensively, Wheaton Academy contained a collection of very creative Lyons attackers to keep the clean sheet. The game-winner came as a result of quick combination play down the left flank. Rachael Nasralla made a great run down the left wing, receiving a through ball from Crystal Thomas. Nasralla crossed the ball from just outside of the box to find Jenn Lee 10 yards out. Lee finished with first time strike to the near post, beating a diving Lyons goalkeeper. Emily Mulder had six saves in the match for the Warriors. WA moves to 5-2-1 on the season. NEXT GAME: HOME vs Westminster next Thursday. WA outshot Timothy 36-1 in the match, but seemed to have trouble finding the back of the net. Alexa Sharkey opened the scoring, and added an assist on the second goal. Ally Witt scored the second goal of the night, and Crystal Thomas finished the scoring in the second half with a neatly placed shot just inside of the post. Emily Mulder recorded 1 save in the match on Timothy's lone shot. The most notable moment of the match, however, came just after the whistle blew, when players and coaches from both teams joined at midfield for prayer. Rather than having a large group prayer after the game, the Warriors split off and prayed individually for each of the girls from Timothy Christian. This was a great testimony of what Christ-centered athletics can look like. The Warriors will certainly look for future opportunities to share their faith with their opponents. The ladies are back in action Thursday afternoon at Lyons Township.
