After being frustrated by an opening score of 77, Junior Blake Biddle bounced back on Saturday with a score of two-over-par 73 to earn All-State honors, finishing 9th in the field of 105 golfers. Likewise, after shooting an opening round score of 82, Junior Jeff Berg also fired a 73 on Saturday to finish in 16th place overall. Freshman Lars Olson scored for the Warriors on both days, shooting a score of 80 on Friday and 88 on Saturday. CJ Urbanowski scored for WA on Friday, also shooting a score of 80. Juniors Austin Graff and Jay Gulbransen, with senior Ben Souders completed the tournament team that brought home the third place trophy. This was the highest finish ever for a Wheaton Academy Golf Team.
Golf Team Begins Postseason Wins 2A Regional Posted on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008 at 5:15 AM Playing on their home course Pheasant Run, the Warrior Golfers won their sixth IHSA Regional Championship in seven years. David Flynn was the medalist, shooting a score of three-under-par 69. Blake Biddle finished second overall with a score of 71. Jeff Berg and Lars Olson completed the scoring for the Warriors, each shooting a score of 80. The next competition for the Golf Team will be the IHSA Sectional Tournament on Monday, October 13, at Crystal Woods Golf Club in Woodstock. Golfers Extend Streak to 30 Finish Season's Match Schedule Undefeated Posted on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008 at 2:08 PM With victories over Burlington Central, Marmion, and Chicago Christian, the Golf Team concluded this season’s match schedule with a perfect record of 15 wins and 0 losses. The Golf Team is no unbeaten in 30 consecutive matches, dating back to September of 2006. In the Burlington match, David Flynn led all players with a score of 33. Blake Biddle (37), Lars Olson (40), and Ben Souders (41) completed the scoring for the Warriors. In the Marmion match, Blake Biddle led the Warriors with a score of 34. David Flynn, Jeff Berg, and Lars Olson added scores of 37, 38, and 40, respectively. Against Chicago Christian, Blake Biddle was medalist, shooting a score of 33. Teammates Ben Souders (40), CJ Urbanowski (42) and Elio Vento (42) completed the scoring. Warriors Are Wheaton City Champs Beat St. Francis, WWS and Wheaton North Posted on Monday, Sept. 29, 2008 at 2:04 PM For the second consecutive year, the WA Golf Team was victorious over St. Francis, Wheaton South and Wheaton North to earn the title of City Champions. David Flynn led all players with a score of 4-under-par 68. Blake Biddle finished in second place with a score of 69. Fighting off illness throughout his round, Jeff Berg added a score of 80 for the Warriors. Ben Souders completed the scoring for WA with 81 strokes. Warriors Continue Winning Ways Beat PSL foes Walther Lutheran and Westminster Posted on Monday, Sept. 29, 2008 at 1:46 PM Competing in a triangular match against PSL opponents Walther Lutheran and Westminster Christian, the Varsity and JV teams notched two victories apiece. Blake Biddle led all players with a score of one-under-par 34. Jay Gulbransen, Lars Olson, and Ben Souders completed the scoring for WA, each one shooting a score of 37. All four of these scores were better than the best score from either of the competing schools as the margin of victory over Westminster was 32 strokes and 41 strokes over Walther Lutheran. The JV match was shortened to 6 holes (par 23) because of the onset of darkness. The margins of victory were a little closer (2 strokes over Westminster and 7 strokes over Walther) but that often happens in shortened matches. Clayton Bruntjen led the Warriors with a score of 31. Karsten Hultgren added a score of 32 while Josh Bertsche, Josh Westrate, and Jason Shap all shot scores of 33. Golfers Stay on Winning Path Up to 25 Straight Victories Posted on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008 at 5:38 AM On September 22 and 23, the Varsity Golf Team extended its match record to 25 consecutive victories. Monday, the Warriors defeated Glenbard North (the last team to gain a victory against the WA golfers in 2006) by a score of 149 to 158. Blake Biddle led all players with a score of even-par 35. Jeff Berg, Lars Olson and Ben Souders each shot 38 to complete the scoring for the Academy. Tuesday, the Warriors defeated Driscoll Catholic (the team against which the winning streak began) by a score of 147 to 158. Blake Biddle and Lars Olson tied for medalist honors, each shooting a score of 36. David Flynn shot 37 and Jeff Berg 38 to complete the scoring. In a close match, the JV Golf Team lost to Glenbard North by a score of 183 to 182. Elio Vento led all players with a score of 41. Jack Anderson (44), Nick Bradley (48) and Clayton Bruntjen (50) completed the scoring. On Tuesday, the JV Golfers defeated Driscoll by a score of 175 to 207. Jack Anderson led all players with a score of 39. Other scorers were Jason Shap (42), Clayton Bruntjen (46) and Nick Bradley (48). Next up for the Warriors is a triangular match against Walther Lutheran and Westminster Christian on Thursday at Pheasant Run, beginning at 4:00.
Warriors Remain Undefeated Golfers defeat Timothy Christian Posted on Friday, Sept. 19, 2008 at 1:38 PM Playing their first match in more than a week, the Warrior Golfers won over conference opponent Timothy Christian by a score of 156 to 169. Recent heavy rains had severely restricted recent practice and competition schedules and it showed as this was the highest score for the season. Good performances were turned in by Blake Biddle with a score of one-under-par 34 and Jeff Berg with a score of 38. Ben Souders, CJ Urbanowski, Jay Gulbransen, and Lars Olson all shot 42. WA Extends Winning Streak to Seven Golfers continue great play Posted on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 at 1:54 PM Playing a triangular match at River Bend Golf Course in Lisle on September 10, the Varsity Golf Team picked up two victories against Lisle and Reed Custer. Team scores for the match were WA 151, RC 162, and Lisle 198. David Flynn led all players with a score of two-under-par 34. Blake Biddle shot 36, Jeff Berg shot 39, and Jay Gulbransen completed the scoring with a round of 42. The Warriors will be in competition next on Saturday, September 13, at the Aurora Central Catholic Invitational at Phillips Park Golf Course in Aurora. Competition begins with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. WA Golfers win again Take down St. Francis Posted on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008 at 1:58 PM Playing at the St. Francis home course, Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton, the Varsity Golf Team defeated the Spartans by a score of 151 to 160. Junior David Flynn led all players with a score of one-under-par 35. Junior Blake Biddle and Freshman Lars Olson were next for the Warriors, both shooting scores of 38. Junior Jeff Berg completed the scoring with a round of 40. The JV Golf Team was defeated by St. Francis by a score of 168 to 187. The leading scorers for WA were all freshmen: Jack Anderson shot 42, Elio Vento and Nick Anderson both shot 47 and Josh Bertsche completed the scoring with a 51. Golfers score four victories in one night Beat Aurora Christian and Illiana Christian Posted on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 at 12:58 PM Playing in a triangular match against Aurora Christian and Illiana Christian at Phillips Park, the Varsity and JV Golf Teams each scored two victories on September 3. The Varsity shot a score of 149 (5 over par) versus scores of 162 by Illiana and 179 by Aurora. Blake Biddle led all players with a score of 2-under-par 34. David Flynn was second among all the players with a score of 36. Completing the scoring for WA were Jeff Berg (39) and Ben Souders (40). The JV, shooting a score of 179, was victorious over Illiana and Aurora with respective scores of 188 and 199. Jack Anderson led all JV players with a score of 40. Completing the scoring for the JV Warriors were Elio Vento (44), Josh Bertsche (46), and Josh Westrate (49). The next match is against St. Francis at Arrowhead Golf Course in Wheaton. WA Wins First Home Match Flynn shoots -4 Posted on Friday, August 29, 2008 at 5:15 AM The Warrior golfers were victorious at both the Varsity and JV levels against Montini Catholic on Wednesday, August 27. Playing their first match of the season at home course, Pheasant Run, the Varsity came within one stroke of tying the school record by shooting a score of one-over-par 141 against a score of 163 from Montini. David Flynn led all scorers, shooting four-under-par 31. Blake Biddle shot 34, and Ryan Dzingle shot 37. Ben Souders and Jeff Berg tied for fourth place to complete the scoring with a pair of 39’s. The JV team was lead by freshman Elio Vento, shooting a score of 41. Nick Bradley (45), Jack Anderson (47), and Clayton Bruntjen (48) completed the scoring. The JV total of 181 provided a comfortable margin over Montini’s total of 201. Next up for the golf team is the Wheaton City Junior Varsity Championship, to be held at Pheasant Run on Saturday, August 30, beginning at 1:30 p.m. WA Opens Season with Win Varsity Plays Strong at Kaneland Posted on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at 5:15 AM The Warrior Golf Team opened its 2008 season today with a decisive victory at Hughes Creek Golf Course in Elburn, defeating Kaneland HS by a score of 301 to 341. Junior Blake Biddle led all players with a score of three-under-par 69. Juniors David Flynn and CJ Urbanowski added scores of 74 and 78 while senior Ben Souders closed out the scoring with an 80. The JV Team, featuring seven new freshmen and only one sophomore, were defeated by a score of 365 to 408. Nick Bradley was low man for the JV Team with a score of 94. Biddle Scores at Illinois Open WA Junior Plays Against Top Players in State Posted on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at 6:45 AM How did you spend your summer vacation? Junior Blake Biddle spent three days of his vacation playing golf against the best professional and amateur players in our state. Being the youngest player in the Illinois Open Championship may just have given Blake the special incentive he needed to play his best against the high quality players in this tournament. On the first day of the three-day tournament, Blake was at the top of the leaderboard, tied for first place with a score of four-under-par 67. Proving day one was no fluke, Blake was in second place after the second round. At the conclusion of the tournament, Blake finished in fifth place, just four strokes behind the winner. Throughout the tournament, WA teammate Ben Souders was his caddie, providing encouragement and advice. After the tournament, Blake said “I had a lot of fun and I was very pleased with my game but I am really excited about the high school season, I can’t wait for it to start.”
