Dave Underwood begins his first year as the Varsity Boys soccer head coach in 2007, though he is no stranger to Wheaton Academy boys’ soccer. Prior to being named head coach of the varsity program, Underwood was the head coach of the JV team from 2002-2005 and served as the varsity assistant in 2006.
In addition to his responsibilities as the boys’ coach, Dave has also been the head coach of the Wheaton Academy girls’ program since 2004. In his first year as the head coach of the women’s program, Underwood guided the Warriors to their first IHSA state championship and has compiled a record of 59–24-13 in four seasons. The Warriors have won 4 conference championships and Underwood has been named PSL Coach of the Year three times. Ten of his former players are now playing college soccer.
Coach Underwood is a graduate of Dayton Christian High School (1988) and played soccer at Grace College in Winona Lake, IN. Upon graduating in 1992, Underwood served as a Graduate Assistant at Grace for one season. Coach Underwood began his high school coaching career in 1993 where he guided the Lakeland Christian Academy boys’ varsity soccer team for three seasons (1993-1995) to a combined record of 29-14. Underwood has also served as the varsity boys’ assistant at Warsaw High School (Warsaw, IN) for two seasons, the head boys’ coach at Okinawa Christian School International (Okinawa, Japan) for two seasons, and another season at Lakeland Christian Academy in 2001.
Underwood has received an NSCAA National Diploma, has attended coaching symposiums at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University, and World Class Coaching. He holds a BS from Grace College, an MA from Grace Theological Seminary, and is currently working on a Master’s in Athletic Coaching Education at West Virginia University.
In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Dave serves as a faculty member in the Bible Department.
Coach Underwood lives in West Chicago with his wife, Jennifer, who also teaches at Wheaton Academy, and their three children, Emily, Jacob and Madeleine. He attends Water’s Edge Bible Church.
