Cross Country Season Concludes

Three Runners Make Sectionals

The Wheaton Academy Cross Country season concluded on Saturday at Belvidere High School. For the girls, Jacqueline Smith, as a freshman, qualified for the IHSA 2A sectional, and finished in 13th place overall. Her 13th place finish was one place away from qualifying for state! Mike DeRenzo and Kent Smith also qualified for the sectional. In their race, Mike finished three seconds behind the final state qualifier.

The Warrior Cross Country team competed at Oakhusrt Forest Preserve for the second time this year, this time for the SCC Championship race. In the inaugural SCC race, the ladies took 6th place and the guys took 5th place. The boys also had enough to score as a Fresh/Soph team, finishing 6th in that race. Kent Smith (2nd), Mike DeRenzo (5th) and Jacqueline Smith (6th) were named All SCC first team. The Warriors will begin the IHSA state tournament next Saturday at Oakhurst Forest Preserve. Race times are 1pm and 2pm.

SCC Championship Saturday

The Warrior Cross Country team travelled an hour and a half on Columbus Day to compete in the 50 team Amboy Invitational. The guys finished in 17th place, led by Kent Smith and Mike DeRenzo's top 25 finish. The ladies finished 15th, led by Jacqueline Smith's top 25 finish. The Warriros will be competing in the first SCC Championship race this Saturday at Oakhurst Forest Preserve.

XC Hosts Warrior Invite during Homecoming

Boys Take 3rd Place

On a cool Saturday morning, the Cross Country team hosted the 3rd Annual Warrior Invitiational. Featuring 11 teams, including some regional and conference opponents, the boys finished in 3rd place as a team - their highest finish at an invite this year. Mike DeRenzo won the Varsity Boys race in 16:26 and Kent Smith finished 3rd to help pace the boys. The girls didn't score as a team due to a handful of injuries, but the three varsity freshman of Jacqueline Smith, Katherine Savenok, and Elyse Sandberg represented the girls well. The team will be racing next on Columbus Day at the Amboy Invitational.

Host Only Home Meet This Week

The Warriors competed at the fast course in Oakhurst Forest Preserve on Saturday. Kent Smith led the guys with a 13th place finish and a 15:33 finish time for the 2.9 mile course. Jacqueline Smith and Hannah Huff led the lady Warriors. This Saturday the Cross Country team will have it's only home meet of the year at the Warrior Invitational. Races start at 9am. Come support the cross country team!

Site of State Championship Race

The Wheaton Academy Warriors ran at Detweiller Park early Saturday morning at the Peoria Woodruff Invite. The girls finished 20th out of 40 full teams. Ally Witt ran in her first face of the season, running a 20:34, and Jacqueline Smith was right next to her, running a 20:35. Peter Heidlauf came back from a shin injury to run a 19:03, and Kent McDonell ran a 19:26, finished second for the boys. Next race is Saturday at the Minooka Flight race.

Team Sets Personal Best Times in 3A Race

Saturday morning had both the boys and girls cross country teams competing in the large 3A St. Charles East Invite at LeRoy Oaks Forest Preserve. Jacqueline Smith and Hannah Huff once again led the ladies, finishing 40th and 57th respectively. Also scoring in the varsity race were Ericka Wilk, freshman Elyse Sandberg, and Kristen Wittmuss. For the boys, they were led by Kent Smith (16:05), Corbin Sallis, and Jerry Budzisz. Next race will be on Saturday Detweiller Park in Peoria - the site of the state final.

Cross Country Starts

Two 3rd Place Finishes at Kaneland

Both the boys and girls cross coutnry teams opened up competition on Tuesday afternoon at Elburn Woods against Kaneland. Jacqueline Smith and Hannah Huff led the ladies, and Kent Smith paced the boys, finishing 5th in 17:16. Both boys and girls took 3rd place as teams. The cross country teams will next be in action on Saturday at the large St. Charles East Invitational.
