![]() Cross Country finishes well at state Boys finish 16th, Girls Finish 7th 11.06.07 :: Cross Country :: Posted at 12:01 PM The cross country team traveled down to Peoria on Friday morning in preparation for the state final meet at Detweiler Park on Saturday morning. The girls team came out and performed extremely well, earning the team a 7th place class AA finish. Sarah Daly finished 23rd overall, running an 18:15 on the three mile course, and accordingly was given all-state honors. Junior Becca Long ran her best race of the season as well, finishing 30th with a time of 19:02. On the boys end, the team was pleased with their 16th place AA state finish. Mark Phillips came in at 28th place with a mile pace of 5:11 and 15:32 overall, and sophomore Mike DeRenzo finished with a 16:09 time. Consistent times from Kent Smith and freshman Peter Heidlauff and a season best for senior Matt DeRenzo rounded off the scoring for the Warriors. Saturday's race marked the end of the cross country and fall sports seasons. Overall, coach Bill Bickhart's cross country team enjoyed a tremendous amount of success this season and have a lot to thank God for.
Warriors Advance to State Both Boys and Girls teams qualify 10.28.07 :: Cross Country :: Posted at 1:08 PM A rainy cool Saturday in Skokie turned into a sunny, successful day for both the girls and boys cross country teams. The girls started off the day by taking second in the Chicago Jones sectional. Finishing second allowed the girls to advance to the state meet for the 10th time in the last 11 years. Four girls were under 20:00 minutes on the 3 mile course. Sarah Daly took home all-sectional honors, finishing in 3rd place. The boys team ran the race of the year and qualified for state by the slimmest of margins. The boys scored 154 points, tying Chicago U-High, for the 5th and final qualifying position. Mark Phillips was name all-sectional, finishing in 6th place. The two teams will leave on Friday for the state final in Peoria. Amboy Invite 10.13.07 :: Cross Country :: Posted at 7:06 PM On Columbus Day, the Wheaton Academy Warriors participated in the Amboy Invitational. Out of the 52 teams that were represented, the varsity girls took 3rd place and the varsity boys took 7th place. In a field that had over 50 teams and many perennial state contenders, the Warriors raced strong. Sarah Daly took 4th place in the varsity girls race. Becca Long (26th), Anna Curato (33rd) and Hannah Huff (39th) took home medals. The girls scored 141 points and finished 3rd behind two-time defending Class A state champion Winnebago, and a strong Eureka team. On the guys side, Mark Phillips ran his first strong race since coming back from injury, leading the team with a 13th place finish and 15:29 overall. Kent Smith (39th) and Mike DeRenzo (44th) were also produced top 50 finishes for the guys. Overall the boys finished 243 points and in 7th place, two points behind Beecher. The Warriors will be running in the PSL Championships on Saturday at Oakhurst Forest Preserv Warrior Invite Girls take 2nd, Boys take 1st 9.29.07 :: Cross Country :: Posted at 5:29 PM The second annual Warrior Invitational was run under beautiful conditions on Saturday. Jeremy Mitchell was the JV boys race champion, and Anthony LaMantia finished 6th in the race. Kristen Wittmus took 4th for the JV girls. The varsity girls tied for first in points, but because of running only 5 runners, finished second behind Aurora Central Catholic. Sarah Daly went sub 19 and took second place, while Anna Curato and Becca Long both finished in the top 10. The varsity boys took first place at their own invitational. Mike DeRenzo took 4th place, and both Mark Phillips and Kent Smith finished in the top 10. The Warriors will compete next at the Amboy Invitational on Columbus Day before finishing off their regular season with the PSL championships on October 13.

9.23.07 :: Cross Country :: Posted at 2:40 PM The cross country teams competed in the 17 team Aurora Central Catholic Invite at Oakhurst Forest Preserve. On a course that produced extremely fast times, and in a meet that had multiple 3A teams, the Warriors took the challenge, looking to build on the success that they had a week earlier in Peoria. The varsity girls took home the 3rd place trophy, and Sarah Daly led the girls finishing 3rd individually. Anna Curato also took home honors by finishing in the top 30. The boys team finished 11 out of 17 teams. Mike DeRenzo finished in 20th place. Next race is on Wednesday in the PSL flight race at Schiller Woods. Complete Race Results (PDF) Warriors run well at Peoria 9.16.07 :: Cross Country :: Posted at 2:42 PM On Saturday, the Warriors participated in the 74 team Peoria Notre Dame Invitational, held at the state final course in Peoria. The girls finished in 24th place. Sarah Daly led the way with a 59th place finish (18:43), followed by Anna Curato (19:49), Becca Long (19:50), Katy Emerson (20:48) and Hannah Huff (20:29). All five of the girls set personal bests during the run. The boys team finished in 34th place. Mike DeRenzo (16:15), Peter Heidlauf (16:46), Kent Smith (16:51), Matt DeRenzo (17:22), Shai Weinstein (17:31), and Benjamin Euler (18:17) were scorers for the boys. Just as the girls had, the each of the boys set personal bests at the meet. The Warriors will have a week of training before heading to the Aurora Central Catholic Invite next Saturday, where they will race against many teams that they will see in Regionals. The varsity girls started off the day by finishing 1, 2, 3 in the relay race, scoring a perfect 6 points. The varsity boys took second behind a tough Illiana team. The team will be taking a trip to Peoria at the end of the week to run in the Notre Dame Invitational. Cross Country Off to Strong Start Kaneland Invite 8.29.07 :: Cross Country :: Posted at 6:49 AM Today the Warriors opened up the cross country season at Elburn Woods against Kaneland and West Chicago. Running against strong Class 2A and 3A competition, the Warriors stepped up to the line and ran hard. Sarah Daly led the varsity girls, finishing second in the race, and covering the 2.4 mile course in 17:42. Anna Curato and Becca Long followed closely behind. Overall, the girls finished with 50 points and in third place. On the boys side, Mike DeRenzo won the individual title with a time of 18:14 on the 3 mile course. Kent Smith followed close behind in 4th place. The boys finished in second place with 42 points, losing to a good Kaneland team by 7 points. The cross country team will be in action next Saturday at LeRoy Oaks Forest Preserve in St. Charles. |
