The Fall Sports Season officially came to a close as the Cross Country team competed in Peoria for the IHSA State Finals. The girls team, led by Sarah Daly's 17th place finish, finished 8th in the state. Sarah, along with freshman Ally Witt, made the all-state team. Ally finished 21st in the state. On the boys side, Mark Phillips and Kent Smith competed. Kent finished in 65th place, and Mark Phillips finished in 4th place. That tied for the highest finish in the school's history by a cross country runner.

Wheaton Academy finished 3rd in the girls IHSA Regional race and 4th in the boys race. With these finishes, both the teams will compete at the Belvidere Sectional next Saturday morning. Sarah Daly and Mark Phillips were named all-regional with 3rd and 2nd places respectively in their individual races.

The Warrior CC teams made strong statements in the final ever PSL race. The boys finished first with a team score of 50, defeating Illiana by 12 points. In the race, Mark Phillips, Mike DeRenzo, and Kent Smith took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places respectively. That is the first time in the school's history that the Warriors took the top 3 positions in the PSL Championship. On the girls side, Sarah Daly won the individual title, and Becca Long and Hannah Huff also received all-conference honors. The team begins regionals on Saturday at ACC.

54 teams were represented at the Columbus Day Amboy Invitational, and the Cross Country Team rose to the occasion. The girls team finished in 4th place out of 33 complete teams. Sarah Daly finished 3rd, while Hannah Huff also medaled for the girls, finishing 25th. The girls averaged a 20 second improvement from their times on the course last year. On the boys side, Mark Phillips took home the boys individual title, running the 4th fastest time ever on the course. His winning time of 14:28 put him in the mix with other state title contenders. Mike DeRenzo (14th) and Kent Smith (22nd) also medaled for the boys team, which finished in 6th place out of 35 complete teams.

The Cross Country team had their only home race of the season this morning in the 14-team Warrior Invitational. The girls team won the invitational, narrowly defeating Aurora Christian. The boys team took second place behind a strong Sandwich team. Mark Phillips set the boys course record, covering the WA home course in 15:42. The team will next be in action on Columbus Day in the 52 team Amboy Invitational.

In the final PSL Flight Race, Wheaton Academy demonstrated why they are one of the strongest teams in the PSL. Out of 14 flights, the Warriors took first place in 10 of the flights. 6 girls took 1st place in their respective flights - Sarah Daly, Becca Long, Anna Curato, Katy Emerson, Kristen Wittmuss, and Julia Nellessen. On the boys side, the top 4 boys took first in their flights - Mark Phillips, Mike DeRenzo, Kent Smith, and Shai Weinstein. This perfomance will aid the Warriors in their quest for a PSL Championship in 3 weeks. Next race is on Saturday, the one home meet the Warriors have. First race is 9:00am on WA Campus.

Boys have all-time best finish

On a course that is known to produce fast times, the Warriors came out strong with solid times. The girls finished 5th out of 16 full teams. Sarah Daly, Hannah Huff, Becca Long, and Anna Curato all finished in the top 30 at the Varsity Level. The boys finished in 4th place - an all time best finish for the boys team at this race. Mark Phillips (2nd) and Mike DeRenzo (9th) took top 10, while Kent Smith was close behind in 15th place. The Warriors will have a busy week during homecoming week - they will race on Wednesday in the final PSL Flight Race, then have their only home meet of the year on Saturday as they host the Warrior Classic Invitational.

Boys Take 19th, Girls Finish 23rd

The Warriors travelled down to Peoria to participate in one of the largest invites in Illinois. In all, 82 schools were represented at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Invitational. Out of the 55 full boys team, WA finished 19th, and defeated many 3A schools such as Lincoln-Way East, Bartlett, and West Chicago. Mark Phillips led the boys with a personal best time of 15:06. Mike DeRenzo (15:58) and Kent Smith (16:09) finished in the top 60. Out of the 2A schools, the Warriors finished 3rd. On the girls side, there were 48 full teams, and the girls finished 23rd. Sarah Daly led the girls, finishing in 61st place. Alli Witt, Hannah Huff, Becca Long, and Katy Emerson rounded out the scorers for the Warriors. Both the girls and boys will next compete at the ACC Invitational on Sept. 27.

Wheaton Academy participated in the final PSL Cross Country Relay race on Tuesday. The Varsity Girls took 1st place. Sarah Daly and Becca Long combined together for the top relay team. Anna Curato/Katy Emerson and Hannah Huff/Kristen Wittmus rounded out the Varsity Girls. The boys finished in 3rd place behind a tough Illiana and surprising Aurora Christian team. The team of Mark Phillips and Mike DeRenzo took first place overall in the relay. The team travels down to Peoria over the weekend for the 60 team Peoria Notre Dame Invitational.

The Cross Country team competed in their first major invite of the season at LeRoy Oaks Forest Preserve on Saturday. Participating in the 20 team St. Charles East Invitational, many of the Warriors ran faster than they ever had before. In all, 12 returning runners set personal bests. Mark Phillips and Sarah Daly both took home medals. Mark finished 4th overall in the varsity race with a personal best time of 15:20 and Sarah Daly took 16th overall in the varsity girls race with a time of 19:01. The Warriors will have the week off from racing before the Westmont Invitational on Saturday morning.

The Warrior Cross Country team opened up the season with two second place finishes at Kaneland. Competing on a 2.38 mile course, Ally Witt finished first on the team in a time of 16:29, followed by Sarah Daly at 16:33. On the guys side, Mark Phillips won the 3 mile race in 16:44, while Kent Smith and Mike DeRenzo finished 3rd and 4th respectively in the race. Next race for both the girls and boys will be Saturday at LeRoy Oaks Forest Preserve.

ATHLETIC PHYSICALS ARE NECESSARY TO COMPETE IN FALL CROSS COUNTRY AND MUST BE RETURNED TO THE ATHLETIC OFFICE ASAP.

Summer Running Series: will continue to meet until August 12. Tuesday/Thursday 6:30am for weights and 7:00am for our run.
Friday at 12:30 at the SportsMed Clinic of Carol Stream. This is our cross training day.

CROSS COUNTRY CAMP DATES
August 13
, 7:00am: Opening Day. Time Trial on our home course. All varsity runners (boys and girls) must complete the course in 25:00 or less. All junior varsity runners (boys and girls) must complete the course in 28:30 or less

Aug. 13-15 - Team trip to Three Bears Lodge in Wisconsin. Cost is $25.00 per athlete. We should be back by 3pm on Friday afternoon.

Aug. 16 - Bike/Run workout.

Aug. 18-23. Practice will be held from 7:00am to 9:00am at the Wheaton Academy Gymnasium
** For those athletes who fail to make the qualifying time, they will be given another chance to make the time on Monday August 18 at 7:30am

Aug. 25 - First day of school. Practice goes from 3:25pm-5:00pm during the school year.
