The Varsity guys were back in action at Elgin High School Wednesday night going three games in the match to come away with the win. The Warriors showed another level of toughness tonight working through several injuries and a new line-up. As a team, the boys pulled together and stepped up their level of play with a well rounded and balanced attack. Hans Engebretsen, Ben Westrate, David Petersons and Austin Graff accounted for 28 kills and 4 blocks, and Jared Cochrum and Mark Fernandes each had 5 kills and combined for 4 blocks. Leading the offense was Tim Streets (18 assist) and Brandon VanderVeen (14 assist), while Brooks VanderVeen (18 digs) and Jeremy Lenich (11 digs) controlled the back row and serve receive. Jared Cochrum also stepped up big defensively with a career high 18 digs. The Warriors are back in action with a two day road trip playing at Lake Forest Friday and the Waukegan Tournament Saturday. Record 14-7.

The Warriors traveled to Streamwood Wednesday night and went three tough games perservering through some rough spots to ralley to a win. Putting themselves in a hole in the third game, down 19-23, the boys made big play after big play to come from behind and beat the Sabers 28-26 capped with an overpass kill from Jon Lang. The outside hiiters provided the offensive power with Brooks VanderVeeen (18 kills), Jon Lang (8 kills) and Hans Engebretsen (7 kills). Jeremy Lenich provided stability in the back row (23 defensive digs), and Tim Streets and Brandon VanderVeen dished out 16 assist a piece for another solid performance. The Warriors are back in action Friday night at home against the Latin School of Chicago. Record 12-7.

The JV team came out strong with a 6-0 run in the first game to jump to an early lead. The Warriors continued to dominate every part of the game to win handily. In the second game the boys came out struggling to focus and control the serve receive, but they came together and regained control of the match and rolled to another impressive win. The Warriors serving (11 aces) and blocking (9 solo and 4 assisted) as a team provide the offensive punch for the night. Record 11-3.

The Warriors won in two games straight against a scrappy St. Edwards team. The boys struggled with focusing on some of the little things at times against St. Eds, but put together some good runs in the game with their serving to push them through to a win. Hans Engebretsen for the third time this season served us into wins at the end of a close game--serving 3 in a row with an ace to win in the tight second game of the match. Tim Streets had a strong night setting dishing out a season high 17 assist and Mark Fernandes played solid in the middle giving us 7 blocks. Brooks VanderVeen played one of his best all around matches with superior ball control for serve receive, 11 defensive digs, served 4 aces and a monstrous night at the net (16 kills and 4 blocks.) The Warriors are back in action Wednesday playing at Streamwood.

JV played an outstanding all around game defeating visiting St. Edwards in two straight games. Offensively the team totaled 15 kills, led by middle hitter Kevin Schmidt (5 kills), but the Warriors defense stifled every attempt by St. Ed's offense. Scott Nellessen, Caleb Chiang and Josh Lee (13, 12 and 11 defensive digs respectivley) topped with an amazing defensive save from Josh Lee while on the ground. That play was representive of the defensive attitude and committment the Warriors showed all night. Kevin Schmidt had a tremendous game blocking at the net (5 solo and 3 assisted) and set the tone early in the match with back to back blocks right at the start of the match. The JV are back in action this Wednesday as they travel to Streamwood. Record 10-3.

The Warriors put themselves in a hole early in the first game of the match trailing by as many as 9 against visiting Lake Forest Academy. With strong blocking as a team (4 solo and 16 assisted) and solid ball control on serve receive from Jeremy Lenich and Brooks VanderVeen, who also had 8 and 9 defensive digs respectively, the Warriors were able to pull together for the come from behind win. Brooks VanderVeen also took over the game offensively with 8 kills on 10 attempts in the first game--highlighted by a crushing inside set and kill from a designed offensive play that had LFA standing flat footed at the net. Brandon VanderVeen and Jeremy Lenich also contributed two solid serving runs that were crucial to the teams come back. Tim Streets and Brandon VanderVeen dished out 8 assist a piece to help lead the offense. And Mark Fernandes played a solid all around game (4 kills and 5 blocks) to be a force in the middle. The Warriors are back in action Wednesday night at Montini. Record 7-3.

JV started the match strong and finished off the visiting Lake Forest in two game straight. Offensively the JV was led by Scott Nellessen (6 kills) and Kevein Schmidt (4 kills), and defensively Kevin Schmidt also chipped in 4 solo blocks. As a team the Warriors served well with 10 aces and a couple long streaks of serves from Drew Cochrum and Jack Rose. Jack Rose also had a good night setting (12 assist), and Trevor Adams had a solid all-around night setting adn hitting (8 assist and 4 kills). The JV squad takes it's record to 7-1 and is back in action against Montini Wednesday.

The Varsity boys rolled to their 4th straight victory with another road win over St. Edwards. The Warrriors came out firing on all cylinders with their serving, blocking and ball control. The team once again totaled in double figures for blocks (7 solo and 12 assisted) and served over 90% with 7 aces. Jared Cochrum played an outstanding all around game (6 kills, 5 blocks , 8 digs) and established his presence right away in the middle. Jeremy Lenich and Brooks VanderVeen did a great job controlling the serve recieve and defense totaling over half of the teams 41 defensive digs (VanderVeen 10 , Lenich 11), and Hans Engebretsen and David Petersons had strong steady performances getting alot of the little things done to keep the team rolling. The Warriors look to take their game up a notch this weekend at the Streamwood Invite where they will face some of the best teams in the area. Record 4-0.

The JV boys won a hard fought match against St. Edwards to take their record to 7-1 for the season. The match was a defensive battle from the very beginning with the Warriors totaling 64 defensive digs and 12 blocks as a team. Austin Graf and Scott Nellessen provided stability and leadership for the team with strong overall play and guided the team in a come from behind win. The JV will have a good rest and be back in action next Tuesday against Lake Forest. Record 7-1.

Big win for boys volleyball

WA wins in three games against Joliet Catholic

The varsity boys volleyball team came up with a big road win over a very good Joliet Catholic Academy team Monday night. The guys were coming off their Spring Break with just a few practices and running a new line-up for the match, but showed they could adapt and step up to get the job done. They not only got the job done--they came out strong and took game one. In game two they played complacent and sloppy and earned the loss, but in game three the boys showed great mental toughness and rallied back together as a team to dominate the game from the beginning to win the match leading by as much as 8 points in the game. As a team the Warriors recorded 16 blocks (solo and assisted) and served around 90% with 9 aces. Some individual stat leaders were Jared Cochrum (5 kills, 4 blocks), Austin Graf (5 kills, 2 blocks), Brooks VanderVeen (3 aces, 10 kills, 5 blocks) and Jeremy Lenich (3 aces, 12 digs). The boys are back in action Tuesday at St. Edwards where they will look for their fourth straight win.

The JV team never found their rhythm throughout the match against Joliet. The guys played well in spurts and put a good run together in the second game to come from nine down to win the "marathon" game 29-27. Some bright spots were Drew Cochrum with 6 kills and 4 blocks and Iain Mirrilees with 5 kills and 3 aces. The boys will shake it off and be back in action tomorrow against St. Edwards. Record 6-1.

Warriors beat Illiana for 2nd win

Varsity made great strides tonight, showing some mental toughness, with their win over Illiana Christian pushing them to their second win of the season in a hard fought match that went three games. WA never found a good rhythm in the match offensively, but was able to pull together enough defensively and behind some consistent serving to come away with the win. Brandon VanderVeen, Jared Cochrum, Austin Graf and Brooks VanderVeen led the way combining for over 35 digs and Mark Fernandes, Brooks VanderVeen and Jared Cochrum provided a big lift for the team with 16 blocks controlling the net. Hans Engebretsen gave a huge boost serving with 4 aces for the night. Record 2-0.

JV controlled the match from the beginning and won handily at Illiana Christian Monday night. Trevor Adams and Jack Rose dished out 16 assist with Austin Graf and Scott Nellessen providing the base of our offense with 13 kills for the match. Josh Lee and Caleb Chiang provided some strong defensive plays for the night, and as a team the JV also had 8 aces for a strong serving night. Record 6-0

JV Takes 1st place in tournament

The Wheaton Academy JV team took first place in the Oak Forest Invite this past weekend (Saturday 3/22). From the first match of the game WA showed its superior ball control and defensive tenacity controlling every serve receive and picking up every free ball and attack from their opponents. Offensively the boys showed their control and patience allowing their defense to lead them to a strong offensive showing at the net led by Austin Graf and Scott Nellessen on the outsides. Jeremy Lenich controlled the back line playing Libero for the day--Brandon VanderVeen and Jack Rose did a great job setting and leading the offense--Caleb Chiang and Iain Mirrilees did a little bit of everything providing strong passing, blocking and hitting at the net--Josh Lee, Kevin Schmidt and Drew Cochrum established a strong middle both offensively and defensively. It was a true total team effort for the day resulting in the programs first ever tournament win.

The varsity team started strong from the first serve with an ace from Hans Engebretsen and continued to dominate and control the match to win in two straight games. Wheaton Academy established and controlled the middle with Jared Cochrum (7 kills and 2 blocks) and Mark Fernandes (6 kills and 4 blocks). Brooks and Brandon VanderVeen controlled the defensive back line with 15 digs (Brooks) and 13 digs (Brandon). Brooks VanderVeen also chipped in 7 kills and 5 assist in the match. Tim Streets led the team with 18 assist for the match. There was great team focus and effort for the first match of the season. Varsity team plays next 3/24 @ Illiana Christian. .

JV started their first match of the 2008 season a little slow, but found their rhythm and took command of the match mid-way through the first game. It was a good showing and experience as the young squad showed their skill and potential for the up coming season. Scott Nellessen led the offense with 7 kills, Jeremy Lenich and Austin Graf played solid defense with 18 and 12 digs respectively and rookie Kevin Schmitt was a force at the net with 4 blocks. JV plays again 3/24 @ Illiana Christian.
