Warriors don't worry about details

Wheaton Academy's Lucas Young had a quick answer when asked how many goals he has this year after scoring the lone goal in a Class AA sectional semifinal win over St. Charles North on Tuesday.

"I have no idea, and I don't really care right now," Young said. "It went in, we scored and we won."

The sixth-seeded Warriors (15-3-5) beat the second-seeded North Stars (17-5-2) on Young's diving head shot in the game's 18th minute. It came on a beauty of a free kick sent in by Andrew Knighten...Read More...

WA Advances to Sectional Final

Soccer gets 1-0 win against St. Charles North

10.23.07 :: Boys Soccer :: Posted at 10:16 PM

Tuesday night at Wheaton Academy, with high fan-attendance for both teams, the Warriors defeated St. Charles North in the sectional semifinal 1-0. The lone goal of the game was scored on a brilliant diving header from Lucas Young. Andrew Knighten served the ball from 40 yards out on an indirect kick that found Young in fron of the Stars' net. The real key to the victory was the defensive play of Wheaton Academy's back three -- Charles West, Danny Torres, and John Clancy, while BB Taylor and Brooks VanderVeen man-marked North's Andrekus and Picinich in the middle. WA held SCN to two shots on goal; however, Warrior goal-keeper Ryan Seager did a phenomenal job controlling the box for his team. For the Stars, Hosler made a number of notable saves as well, stoning Luke Partain in front of the net, and barely getting a hand on a Charles West header, deflecting it off the cross bar.

Wheaton Academy improves to 15-3-5 on the season, and will play Geneva High School on Thursday at 5pm at Wheaton Academy for the sectional title.

Wheaton Academy too good vs. Glenbard South

10.18.07 :: Boys Soccer :: Posted at 10:56 AM

(Daily Herald) Sixth-seeded Wheaton Academy brought superior size and experience into its Class AA regional opener against 11th-seeded Glenbard South, but that wasn't the extent of its advantage Wednesday.

"They're big, strong, physical and skilled," said Raiders coach Bob Blecher. "I think that they can challenge for the very top of our sectional. They're as good as anyone."

Blecher's crew fought hard in a 4-2 loss to the Warriors, who had the better of play through-out the regional semifinal game played at Wheaton North.

Wheaton Academy (13-3-5) held Glenbard South (9-10-1) without a shot on or off net in the first half -- mainly a byproduct of the Warriors' possession game and persistent attacking pressure.

The Warriors struck first in the game's 12th minute after an Andrew Knighten corner kick deflected out to Justin Potesta, who ripped it under the crossbar from 18 yards out.

"I got a good foot on it and it went to the back of the net," Potesta said. "It was just me and the ball and the goal, so I just hit it."

"Justin stepped up today, and he had another ... rip in the second half that almost went in," said Warriors coach Dave Underwood. "He covered a lot of ground tonight."

Luke Partain scored three minutes later on another hard-hit shot from 16 yards out, and the Warriors led 2-0 at halftime.

Three minutes into the second half, the Raiders' Josh Payne scored his DuPage County-leading 25th goal of the year, dribbling up and poking a shot past a charging goalkeeper from 15 yards out.

The Warriors continued to apply steady pressure, getting second-half goals from Tommy Fuller and Kyle Pilcher before the Raiders' David Pyle finished the night's scoring in the 67th minute.

"I'm very proud of my kids. Today we had one junior, one senior, and nine freshmen and sophomores starting on the field today," Blecher said. "I think they really stepped up to the challenge and played to get the ball in the net."

Raiders goalkeeper Dylan Milkent stood out in net under pressure, while Underwood also appluaded the midfield play of Brooks VanderVeen and the defensive job BB Taylor did on Payne.

The Warriors' win followed host Wheaton North's 6-2 regional semifinal win over Fenton. The Falcons (11-3-7) and Warriors tied 1-1 on Sept. 24, setting up a rematch Saturday's for a regional title.

"We've put together a solid run at the end of the season, and I think we're peaking at the right time," Underwood said.

"We're ready for Saturday," Potesta said. "It's going to be a good game."

The difference in the game came with a direct kick by Kevin Hughes of LP in the 55th minute that was unsaveable, giving Lake Park a 2-1 victory.

Soccer beats Timothy 4-1

The varsity boys soccer team improved to 7-2-4 with Wednesday night's Private School League win against Timothy Christian. The Warriors came out with a bang, scoring in the second minute on a brilliant through ball from Lucas Young to Andrew Knighten (2 goals). The team was successful in their desire to set the tempo of the game from the start with hard, physical play. Despite a bit of a frantic first half on the Warriors' part, the team collectively wisely settled down in the second half, playing the ball to the flanks and getting some good serves from the width, which opened up play for the Warriors.

Goal Keeper Ryan Seager made a number of phenomenal saves in the course of the night. The Trojans' lone goal came on a corner kick where WA accidentally scored it. Wheaton Academy will face a very good Lake Park team next Saturday night (at Lake Park) at 7:00 PM.

Monday's 1-1 tie between the Falcons and Warriors in boys soccer featured a first-half goal by the Warriors' Corey Burke -- and second-half free kick hit perfectly from 25 yards out by the Falcons' Kyle Fishleigh.

"That's the first time all year I've hit one that good," Fishleigh said. "That's my spot."

Goal with 20 Seconds left beats WA

Evenly played game ruined with final minute goal

9.17.08 :: Boys Soccer :: Posted at 11:49 AM

Luke Partain
Saturday afternoon's soccer game with Wheaton Academy and St. Charles North was very evenly played. The Warriors had a number of good looks at a goal particularly off of corner kicks (Lucas Young had 3 headers on frame off of corner kicks), but North Stars' goal keeper, Tyler McEnry proved to be a tough wall to get by, delivering to WA their first shutout of the season. Lucas had a nice game in the middle as did Brooks VanderVeen, who was assigned to mark North's best player Mike Picinich.

The game was decided with 20 seconds left on the clock in the second half when St. Charles North scored a soft goal, leaving WA insufficient time to respond. Though the team would have been disappointed with the tie, the deciding goal in the final seconds was a deeper disappointment. Wheaton Academy will be in action next Tuesday at Illiana Christian at 4:30 PM.

Season Preview

2007 Season

Posted on Thursday, August 16 at 3:45 PM

The Varsity boys soccer team is hoping to improve on a 12-10-2 season (a down year by Wheaton Academy standards) from a year ago.  The Warriors return 12 players from last years squad, including 8 starters.

“This summer the guys have worked really hard to improve their fitness level and work ethic. I think last year left a bad tasted for all of them, and they have resolved to have a different season.” –Underwood

Key Players:
Andrew Knighten—forward, we look for him to score a lot of goals for us this year. He played with the Chicago Magic (one of the top clubs in the Midwest) in the off-season, which has improved his confidence and level of play. He is a magician with the ball at his feet.

Lucas Young—will be moving from Sweeper to Defensive Center Mid. We look for Lucas to control the middle of the field. He is a very capable ball handler with an excellent serve. We also look for him to get forward to create scoring opportunities as well. He should be deadly on set pieces because of his 6’5” frame. Lucas played a key role in the success of the Chicago Magic during the off-season and is drawing interest from several Division I programs. Naturally, he will have a huge impact on our success as well.

Corey Burke—will play some in the mid-field and at forward. We look for Corey to really push the pace and get the ball forward very quickly, which should create some great goal-scoring opportunities for himself and others.

BB Taylor—is still recovering from a stress fracture in his back. We are expecting that he will be back to full strength by early September. We need his defensive presence in the back. BB is a lock down defender that we feel can also get forward in the attack.

Luke Partain—should be another tremendous offensive threat for us. Luke will probably spend some time at both mid-field and forward. Luke is fully recovered from a broken foot that caused him to miss much of the 06 season. We anticipate he will have a great season.

 We feel like we are skilled enough to place well in the Pepsi Showdown, as well as legitimately competing for a regional and possibly sectional championship. The question is whether or not our heart can match our skill.
