Posted under Softball, 5/16/2012

Aurora Central Catholic defeated Wheaton Academy 10-3 and 9-3 during the regular season but its winning in the postseason that matters most and the WA softball team proved that again today as the third-seeded Warriors (10-18) stunned the second-seeded Chargers (18-13), 11-9, at the IHSA 2A Plano Regional. The win marks the fourth consecutive year that the Warriors have won a regional game and Saturday's championship game against top-seeded Lisle will be WA's third title game appearance in the last four seasons. The Warriors jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first as sophomore shortstop Marissa Gagliano sparked the inning with a leadoff double. Gagliano finished the game with five hits, increasing her season total to 52 and her batting average to .541. She also stole two bases to increase her season total to 39. The Warriors tacked on three additional runs in the second, and four more in the third on two-run singles by freshman Megan Herring and sophomore Gina Graff. The Warriors extended their lead to 11-0 midway through the fourth before the Chargers began to chip away with a four-run fourth. WA held an 11-5 advantage before ACC tacked on four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Michelle Ridderhoff earned the win in the circle for WA as she allowed 12 hits and seven earned runs. Eight different Warriors recorded hits, including three by Herring and two by sophomore centerfielder Sarah McClain. WA advances to the regional championship game to face Lisle. The Lions, who finished fourth in last year's 2A state tournament, are currently ranked 10th in the state in 2A and maintain a 27-3 record. The two teams met very early in the season and Lisle won, 13-0, in five innings. Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Plano High School. The winner of that game will advance to next Thursday's sectional final at Genoa-Kingston to face the winner of Immaculate Conception or Mt. Assisi.
